If I recall correctly, McCain was fished out of a lake in Hanoi after being shot down in 1967 or so. The VC would have had no part in this, and Kerry didn't go VVAW until the early '70s.
There appears to be plenty of stuff to hang Kerry on without resorting to refutable items.
