Bush is a politician, nothing more. Bill Clinton at heart was more of a conservative.

TR: Is pres. surprised by amt of resistance in Iraq?

GWB: no, many people in that part of the world who don't want us to succeed. Thinks most Iraqis are glad we're there. Some are nervous because they don't know what govt will look like..."if I recall history, it took us quite a while in the United States".

TR: Would we accept a fundamentalist Muslim regime?

GWB: They're not going to develop that. They're developing a constitution that recognizes minority rights. (stories about Chalabi etc)

MTP; It's been a year, and we're in a difficult situation.

GWB; I'm not sure about the tone of your question, We ARE welcomed in Iraq. Yes there's nervousness in Iraq because of some uncertainty, but we're making progress. Debate in Iraq is good.

W's handling this just fine, imho. Getting better when discussin future of Iraq, vs. continually answering hit questions from Russert. Better on the offense than defense

As an aside, the easiest way to know that this is a good interview is that bashers come onto the thread and try to derail it.

Russert needs a tour of the torture chambers in Iraq, then a side trip to the mass graves as they are being opened. If that doesn't open his eyes to the danger of keeping Hussein in power, then nothing will.

"Then he is lying.
Edwards' lips moved, so yes, that is an accurate assessment."

LOL!

TR: We're clearly involved in nation-building in Iraq; pres. was against in 2000 campaign.

GWB: not nation-building for the sake of nation-building, we're involved in a war. Can't just leave Iraq & leave a vacuum.

Best way to protect America in long term is to promote freedom.

Bush: The road to democracy is bumpy.

Russert: 2000 debate said our troops shouldn't be used for nation building.

Bush: I did say also our troops must be trained and prepared to win a war to make peace more possible. This is nation building, but we're also fighting a war so they can build a nation. The war is against the terrorists and disgrunted Ba'athists and the terrorists who want to stop the advance of freedom.

Freedom is etched in everybody's heart.

Is John Kerry's ponderous voice starting to grate on anyone else's nerves yet?

Weeks ago. He has the nerve to say in that pompous voice that the Bush administration is arrogant.

As I heard Mark Steyn say on Hugh Hewitt this week about Kerry: John Kerry is despicable. A contemptible man.

Love Mark Steyn. He's usually so right (I heard him once offer an opinion I disagree with, but I digress. He nailed Kerry)

Post #129. This is not good! Weasel words. What happen to NO? No I didn't bring country to war on false pretenses! One of George W. Bush's strengths has always been his firm conviction and confidence. And his plain spoken way of speaking.
