One more serious note. The ultimate self-control is to not let anyone else make you angry. Decide when you will get angry and over what issues. It's easy to fly of the handle and act like this customer did, it's tougher to keep one's composure and make a rational debate.

I've managed to keep the peace at work by NOT discussing most political issues with customers EVEN if I'm asked. However, self control and calm attitude is a christian virtue and the workplace isn't the time for polemics.

that he'd report me to NAACP for discrimination, called me a sellout, called me an oreo, called me just about every nasty thing in the book.

That's amazing since that is the same type language used by the Klan against whites who didn't follow their marching orders....

When I first started working there, the hostility was outright and blatant. It was real 'reverse racism' and I was amazed, not shocked but just surprised that people are so angry. BTW, this coincidences with the first of the month (rent) and fifteenth of the month (mortgage and credit card bills) and also Fridays when people get paid.

Hang in there. There's nothing you could do about it.

My dad, who is white, was a District Chief for the Chicago Fire Department. One day a couple came in and started calling my dad a racist and swearing at him.

A few days earlier, their house had started on fire. In their panic, they had run out of the house and left their children to die.

All my dad could do was introduce them to the Captain, who was black, who had answered the alarm. The couple said the same, exact things to him.

If their children hadn't died, it would've been funny.

how sad...I'm sure they regret being so stupid and petty now. I still have to learn to take people/life less seriously.

Yeah. But if you need to be mad, be mad. Otherwise you take it out on the wrong people. ;)

FWIW... Something I found to be very effective is to keep a cool, calm and collected Mona Lisa smile when a lib gets in my face.
Cut them off at their midstream rant with "how do you like me so far?"
Drives them up a wall. They leave in a huff. Respects paid to 'Keen Eddie'.

I thought I'd give everyone an update since a lot of people took time out to give their advice. My hours have been cut in half from full to part time. I live at home but I used to be able to share half the expenses with my mom. Yesterday I gave myself a full day of whining and self pity but today is another day my friends. All at once, I realize my parents raised me absolutely right. My mind business and get an education and don't bother with people. I could hear my father now about this, and if I wrote it here would get me banned *LOL* My mother is only too happy about this situation because she said, 'oh now you're going to medical school' *LOL* My parents have always had a greater faith in my own genius than myself. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do this week but just for today I'll be engrossed in 'Voyage of the HMS Beagle' and the help wanted ads.

Thanks everyone.
