Three high school-aged motorists were injured one believed seriously after the SUV they were in downed a power line and overturned near 26 Mile and Van Dyke Avenue Wednesday in Shelby Township. Details of the 2:45 p.m. accident remained under investigation late Wednesday, but officials believe the driver lost control on an ice patch, hopped the curb, and collided with a utility pole just south of 26 Mile.
The broken pole caused a live wire to snap below onto an eastbound Utica Schools bus, stalling its progress until crews could shut off power, Shelby Township police Sgt. Ken Cazabon said. No one in the bus was injured.
"It appears they (victims' SUV) hit a snow bank and flipped over," Cazabon said.
The driver of the GMC Envoy was thrown from the vehicle and trapped underneath it until fire crews arrived, he said. To remove the trapped teen, fire crews used air balloons and wood to prop up the vehicle, said Bob Kogelmann, Shelby Township fire battalion chief.
The extent of the driver's or her passengers' injuries were unknown. She and the other two teens who had walked away from the wreck were taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital for treatment. The teens are believed to be Eisenhower High School students.
The bus that was stalled by the wire was also full with students from Eisenhower, which is located on 25 Mile Road, just east of Mound Road.
DTE workers said the power line affected only a small nearby area, and was restored to the area by 4:30 p.m.
Only if it is an Assault SUV, with a bayonet lug and an extended magazine.
I hope the Utility Pole was OK.(My old high school janitor was nicknamed "The Utility Pole" so I have a warm place in my heart for them...)
Is it really only SUV's that articles are written from this perspective?
Seems to be, but maybe not altogether bad. Here is another combination of teens who don't realize they're mortal driving a vehicle they probably think is invincible. Bad combination. I say ''another'' because a couple of weeks ago, a 17 year old driving a Jeep Cherokee decided to pass the Subaru Outback my husband was driving. She crossed the centerline, hit the strip of ice along the center & slid into the driver's side rear passenger door. Fortunately no one was injured. Anyway, I think there is a propensity for SUV drivers to overestimate the capability of their vehicles and, in that regard, the publicity about close encounters like this one is a good thing.
I'm STILL laughing at this!!!
It's a goodie.
It takes more driving experience and skill to drive an SUV correctly, what with the SUVs greater propensity to roll over.
IIRC, Dem candidate John Edwards's teenaged son was killed in just such a roll-over a few years ago. (It was a single-car accident. Wonder if Edwards sued the SUV maker?)
Our 18-year old is a 'natural' at driving, and is a super responsible kid -- but even after 2 years' experience he still makes driving mistakes, especially when road conditions are deceptively hazardous. I wouldn't want him to drive an SUV until he's at least, oh, 40.
