Drive-By Shooting at Customs Building
The Associated Press
Saturday, February 7, 2004; 12:55 AM
CORNWALL, Ontario - A U.S.-Canada border crossing was shut down Friday after a drive-by shooting near a Canadian customs building.
Eight employees were in the building at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured, a customs official told the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder, a local newspaper.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Cornwall Island, a Canadian island in the St. Lawrence River north of the New York state border.
Traffic on both sides of the Seaway International Bridge linking Ontario and New York was halted immediately. The border was expected to reopen Saturday.
"It does now appear that customs was not the target," said Pierre Marquis, a spokesman for the Canadian Customs Service.
Police were looking for a suspect, described as a male in his early 20s with an assault rifle. It wasn't known if the shooter drove in from the Canadian or U.S. side.
