New Effort Launched to Give Drivers Licenses to Illegal Immigrants
Immigrant advocates are promoting a new attempt to allow illegal immigrants to obtain drivers licenses. The moved has prompted a number of prominent conservatives to gear up for a fight.
Advocacy groups are counting on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to make good on his promise to reconsider a law giving illegal immigrants the right to drive, as long as security issues are adequately addressed. Petitions in support of a new bill were dropped off at the governor's office on Wednesday.
Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, has pushed for similar laws several times in the past. Senate Bill-60, which he authored, was signed into law just before Gov. Gray Davis left office last year. Schwarzenegger made rescinding SB-60 one of his first orders of business when he became governor.
According to Cedillo, illegal immigrants are driving anyway. He contends his bill would make sure they are tested, licensed and insured. "Our priority and our obligation are to make sure our highways are safe for all the people of California, and that's what the governor and I are committed to," he said.
This time, Cedillo says he is working with the governor's office to devise ways to strengthen the licensing process, making sure applicants go through criminal background checks.
The bill will almost certainly be opposed by conservatives, who say the very concept validates illegal immigration. "We're rewarding those who break the law and punishing those who won't," said Sen. Rico Oller, R-San Andreas. "That's wrong, that's morally wrong. It will be real rough sledding if he [Schwarzenegger] is depending on Republicans to support it.

Does he even need Republicans at all?
Does RINOnegger need a two thirds majority to pass it?

I don't care how many times I read this, It still doesn't make sense to reward folks who are illegals in this fashion.
Cedillo is the one who should be committed, imo.

Yep. And Arnold is not going to get ONE Republican vote for such a "deal." We'll be back to another referendum if they haven't heard us. By golly, they WILL hear us.

But Does he even need any Republican votes at all?
Does RINOnegger need a two thirds majority to pass it or does he just need a simple majority?

No, simple majority is all the Democrats need, and they have plenty more than 50%.
Very few thing need 2/3: taxes, the budget, constitutional changes... anything else?

Don't wait for the criminals in Sacramento to work their perfidy. Download the
Save Our State Initiative Petition. It will deny public benefits to any applicants who aren't in the United States legally, requiring public employees who distribute those benefits to verify the immigration status of everyone, regardless of race or national origin, before benefits can be given. It will also prevent illegal aliens from getting driver's licenses that could otherwise indicate legal residency and qualify them for public benefits. And finally, it will prevent public agencies from using unverified foreign ID cards (such as the Matricular Consular) for identity purposes in California.
598,000 signatures will put it on the November ballot. The deadline for returning petitions is April 15, 2004. If you don't like to download use the following contact information to obtain a petition via the postal service:
