Thankful for the EPG

We all probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the opening of the Electronic Proving Ground and the re-activation of Fort Huachuca this month in 1954.

The EPG was the beginning of a synergy that has since evolved into the U.S. Army's premier proving, training and testing installation, otherwise known as Fort Huachuca.

From its humble beginnings, EPG came about because of the pristine electromagnetic environment in the San Pedro Valley. And as technology advanced, the need for testing this equipment came hand in hand.

Nowadays, EPG staff test everything from Tomahawk missiles to radio transmissions emitted from an M1A1 Abrams tank. Our local facility is known throughout the world for not only its military-related work, but also in the civilian marketplace as well.

We marvel at the sophistication and intelligence of the people who make EPG and Fort Huachuca work every day. The EPG ties in neatly with the fort's other tenet activities including the joint interoperability test center, the 11th Signal Brigade and the intelligence center itself.

We remember a startling statistic while visiting EPG headquarters one year. That is that thanks to the work done there, more than six patents and another pending patent have been filed by personnel affiliated with EPG.

As the EPG celebrates its 50th year of operation, let us all be thankful for the work being accomplished at this part of the fort that many of us don't even think about. But make no mistake, it is a central cog in the wheel that makes the fort a vital part of our national defenses.
