White House seeks to loan U.N. funds for renovations

The Bush administration's new budget includes a $1.2 billion, 30-year loan to renovate the aging United Nations headquarters and build a new annex, although U.N. officials expressed disappointment that Washington will charge interest on the loan.

The loan was part of a $31.5 billion foreign-operations budget request released Monday that also includes major new funding for the fight against AIDS and a revamped U.S. foreign-aid program targeting poor countries that implement political and social reforms.

I don't let my disgust with the U.N. cloud reality. If the U.N. was not given credibility by many nations on this planet, I would say pull out and let it go belly up. Sadly it is given credibility (although very misplaced) and will continue to exist whether or not the U.S. is a member.

Oh, and I do not believe that the U.N. is out to conquer the world. I don't go so far out as to need to wear full body armor made of tin foil.

Don't mistake my comments as support for the U.N. While the idea of a organization for nations to meet and discuss issues in and of itself wasn't a bad idea, like many seemingly good ideas, it went right down into the sewer. Now it is a organization for socialists, communists, and two-bit dictators to whine about how evil the U.S. and some other Western nations are.

There is no guarantee that this will pass Congress and that the U.N. will accept it. In the end they'll whine about it and the issue will die.

Also, it seems a lot of people here think that Bush writes the budget and it becomes law without ever having to go through Congress. Mark my words, when Congress passes ITS budget, it will look very different than what the President submitted. Instead of b*tching @ Bush for overspending, ya'll can blame Congress for piling on the Pork.

Who signed the spending Bill? Who has the veto power? Blame? Plenty to go around by the old standard. But the final blame is always the guy who implements the orders.

Of course, under the NEW regime here at FR, this kind of "conservatism" is a good thing because Bush did it. So get on board. If Bush is giving more money to the UN then it is a "good thing".
