whoa, everybody. this story is just plain off the map. cyanide salts have emormous industrial uses, from use in metal plating to film processing. i used to have a five-pound jar of a cyanide compound for use in bringing up thin negatives, which was purchased at a plain old photo supply store for not much money. that there would be seven pounds of a cyanide salt someplace in iraq means absolutely nothing.

Didn't they use very small chips of this to kill those dogs in that video that was released prior to the war???

Except this was found in a safe house of a known terrorist who specializes in chemical and bio weapons...
Not the same as finding it in your garage.

A 7-pound block of cyanide salt (search) was discovered by U.S. troops in Baghdad at the end of January, officials confirmed to Fox News. Mmmmm, salt.

Nope. GWB could parachute into Pakistan, personally kill UBL, bring back his dismembered head and Fat Ted would still deny Bush his due. It's not about what Bush does, it's about who he is.

Can anyone expand on this Abu Musab Zarqawi guy a bit?

How many people would a 7 lb Cyanide block kill?? More than 100?? My more immediate question is why a salt block? for transport? are they now targeting perverted American cattle and sheep? What?
There must be something going on there.

...seven pounds of a cyanide salt someplace in iraq means absolutely nothing. Except for the fact that it was found in a believed safe house for Abu Musab Zarqawi. Somehow, I don't believe this guy was using it for processing family pictures.

it must be the image of a poisonous salt lick that people walk up to, lick, then die

Abu Musab Zarqawi I'm sure you can find a lot more using Google or perhaps searching the archives here on FR.

>>i'm thinkin that the US is going to find oodles of wmd while the "What happened to wmd intelligence?" commission is studying the problem
Q. How much anthrax is required to constitute WMD quantities?
A. Less than that required to fill the hole Saddam was found hiding in.
There is no doubt the intent, spending, and programs were in place in Iraq. Any rational thinking person who looks at the evidence, understands that taking out Saddam was A Good Thing.

Something else.....if we found this in one of his safe houses...... would it be safe to say that we must be very close on his trail..

Actually, even pointed at the US is probably not good enough. Maybe pointed directly at the UN building? Or somewhere in France, Germany, or Russia.
To: Dog
To me that is the most interesting part of this story. We need to get Zarqawi now, and it looks like we may be close.
Of course, we seemed to be on the heals of Izzat al-Doeri for a while, and I've not seen anything recently to suggest what the situation is with him. In the overall scheme of things maybe he is marginally less important now than a month or two ago, but I'd whoop for joy if he were caught.

My more immediate question is why a salt block?no, no, no. it is a block of cyanide-laced salt. most forms of cyanide are in the form of metallic salts, as in pottassium cyanide, ferric cyanide, sodium cyanide. a block of a cyanide salt was found, not a salt block as we think of it. sometimes it's in powder form, sometimes in a lump, or "block."

I think a lot of people are seeing "cyanide" and in their minds, it conjures up images of the Holocaust and rat poison, but they don't realize that there are hundreds of industrial reactions catalyzed by the SCN- group. Having 7 lbs of cyanide is nothing, and even reasonable.
This is what you get when you have journalists have little or no technical training.
