Top Republicans Want Rudy Convention Keynote (RUDY RUDY RUDY!!!)
WINS NEWS ^ | 2/3/04

Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as the keynote speaker for the Republican National Convention?

Organizers of the event that begins Aug. 30 in Manhattan say they haven't nailed down those details, but Giuliani's successor, Michael Bloomberg, caused a stir when he suggested the idea on Monday.

In a speech to tourism and convention officials, Bloomberg, who was a Democrat before he ran for mayor as a Republican in 2001, joked that he was not a likely choice to headline the GOP gathering. He slyly suggested that he'd "probably lose that battle" to another New York City mayor.

Giuliani, whose spokeswoman had no immediate comment, is an obvious pick for the main speaking slot. He was credited with guiding the city through its grief after the 2001 terror attacks, leadership that also won him nationwide political praise. He was later named Time magazine's Person of the Year.

After he left City Hall, he formed a consulting group, and has said he would probably seek political office again.

Traditionally, keynote addresses are the most important speeches at a convention except for those of the presidential and vice presidential nominees.

The Republicans had no official keynote speaker at their 2000 convention in Philadelphia, opting instead to give prominent speaking roles to Colin Powell, Arizona Sen. John McCain and Laura Bush. In 1996, New York Rep. Susan Molinari was the keynote speaker at the San Diego convention.

Convention staffers say Giuliani could be a contender this year. He will clearly have a significant role in the convention, as chairman of the New York City Host Committee, which raises money for the event.

Gov. George Pataki, also a Republican, said Monday that Giuliani would make a "terrific" keynote speaker.

Convention CEO Bill Harris said the committee planning the event's program has not been formed yet, nor have organizers decided when in the four-day event the keynote speech would take place.

"Nobody's even considered who the keynote speaker's going to be yet," Harris told reporters after Monday's meeting, where he also spoke. "All those questions are by far premature."

Rudy would make a great president.

Why? Because he is a media darling?

Just why do you think he is a media darling anyhow?

It's simple: It's because he is a liberal.

Get a grip.

She's in my prayers.

But you just don't understand the makeup of the GOP.

And you don't realize that your words betray YOUR leftward tilt, or that the words you used in that post are offensive to conservatives.

Later.

The thread is about Rudy Guiliani speaking at the GOP convention. You use it as an occasion to start running everybody through your litmus test screening machine.

I suspect most hard-nosed conservatives would welcome Rudy speaking in his home town.

You really do need to relax; it's too early in the day to get wound up like a coiled spring.

You do what you think you need to do to save the GOP from itself, and I'll do what I think I need to do to accomplish that.

Don't tell me how to post.

Don't get your knickers in a twist. Alot of people like Rudy and not just because of 9/11. He's a tough guy when it comes to people he's not afraid to tell them where to go. I will never forget the time Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was ejected from the Lincoln Center in Manhattan on a visit to the US on the grounds he was a terrorist by Rudy. The Clinton administration was appalled and let Rudy know it. Rudy did what he thought was right regardless. He was not embarassed to give back that check to the Saudi Prince after 9/11. There are alot of other reasons. But I must admit - Rudy is either hated or loved.

By the way, if you bother to read, you will comprehend that I never spoke a word against 'Rudy speaking in his hometown'.

Just don't turn our convention into a leftwing lovefest and expect conservatives to be happy about it, either.

"Regardless Rudy was the best mayor NYC ever had."

The last great mayor New York had was Peter Styvesant. They are all a bunch of leftist liberals.

Giuliani is a FASCIST. Of COURSE he handled 9-1-1 well! ALL fascists can deal with confrontations - they LIKE them.

It isn't my knickers that are in a twist. Who could deny that the man is popular in NY? I sure won't, and I didn't.

Fact is, if he chooses to run against the Hildebeast, he would in all likelihood beat her.

But FReepers should face all of the political realities, not just a few of them. He doesn't represent the views of most Republicans on a large number of issues.

No, and you said nothing positive about Rudy speaking either. You just used this thread as an occasion to rant.

We saw how well your ranting worked for Tom McClintock.

I hate RINOs as much as the next freeper and make no mistake, Rudy is a RINO. However, he is a Republican and I think the Republican party paying tribute to his leadership on 9/11 this way is apropos.

"The streets of New York were cleaner than they ever were. There was a major drop in crime. The quality of life was better in New York City than it ever was."

Mussolini would have done no less.

"I am glad I voted for him twice. And I don't ever regret those votes."

COnsidering the alternatives, did you have any real choice?
Fortunately for the reat of America, there is an alternative to Rudy Giuliani - lots of them.

I have no problem with him speaking.

But I do have a big problem with giving him the premier speaking slot.

He was still the best man for the job, as any fairminded person will admit.

I see you're still fighting the last war, man. Good.

He wouldn't have to. Put him in power and he'll show you just where he stands on those subjects.

This is a guy who waged war on street vendors, outlawed ferrets as pets on the grounds that they are "wild animals", supports gun-control, is pro-gay, pro-abortion, helped Bill Clinton, anbd refused to cooperate with federal officials in dealing with illegal aliens.

SOME MAYOR!!

Like I said, he's in the wrong party.

The only dying breed of Republicans are those isloated in the Northeast like Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.

Thankfully, the rest of the Republicans in the Country still have a political compass.
