The half time show on super bowl I was really something. A Marine flew into the stadium with a rocket pack attached to his back, landed in front of President Kennedy and ripped off a crisp salute. That was really something.

Rush is wrong on this one. This was on a family show. MTV is cable (or satellite), it's not broadcast. We don't let our kids watch MTV because we have it blocked.

This is a rated TV-G rated show. We have our TV set to block anything above TV-G.

I expect MTV to be slutty. That's why we don't watch it. I don't expect the Super Bowl to be slutty.

A few years ago, I encouraged the kids to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade with me. This was CBS also. One of the acts was from the Broadway Show Caberet. It was so sleezy. The custumes were S&M type outfits, and the dancing was very provocative. This was shown Thanksgiving morning at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. I always thought a parade was family entertainment. Now, we don't watch the parade.

It's a shame that our kids can't be kids anymore. My parents went to one of the Super Bowls (I think Super Bowl X) when I was kid. I had a great time watching that Super Bowl on TV looking for my parents. I know my parents really enjoyed that half-time show. It was a nice clean show. My kids won't be able to enjoy things that I did, and it's a shame.

When the little jackass brayed I instantly thought of Howard Dean's scream. It couldn't have been lost on Deaniacs if they saw it.

Well...There was the War of Jenkin's Ear. Somehow I doubt we'll see The War of Janet's Hooter. I could be wrong.

Yeah but the donkey wins the position. Some on the live SB thread were speculating it was pro democrat. The donkey of course being the emblem of the party.

Good points- especially about MTV. No one should be shocked. MTV- the people who brought us "Jacka$$" and other "classics"

[Ah, yes. Don't blame the filth-peddlers, blame the Superbowl audience.] They don't peddle if we don't buy- that's my point.

True, they don't peddle if we don't buy, but in this case they pulled a "bait and switch" on us, IMHO. We tuned in to watch the Superbowl, a supposedly wholesome, traditional American event. The pre-game performances were patriotic and squeaky clean. Then... along came the half-time show, and it was as if we'd suddenly received reception from some channel airing another Superbowl in a parallel universe.

e.g. It's one thing for a woman to go to a male strip club and get flashed, but it's another thing entirely, when a man exposes himself to a woman in a grocery store parking lot. What American viewers were subjected to during the half-time show was the latter.

Even cable viewers, who usually don't mind seeing nudity, at least get some warning before a movie airs. They're warned to expect violence, nudity, foul language, etc. But, Superbowl fans got no such warning. We were not told the half-time show would be Rated R. No voice-over informed us that "the following scene contains content that may be unsuitable for younger viewing audiences". I think we have every right to be outraged.

What's saddest of all is that this is what the performers wanted, because scandalous behavior=publicity, which is the end all be all for these attention hounds. This was very foolish on Miss Jackson's part, though. With her brother facing child molestation charges, now was not the time for her to pull an obscene stunt like this.

He seemed to be saying that we all live in a sewer anyway, so we should just sit back and live in the filth without whining. Maybe some people live in the toilet and think it's no big deal, but others value family time in front of the TV during the Superbowl. It is a tradition with some families, and to suggest that outrage is uncalled for is beyond ridiculous.

I think Rush missed the mark too. When liberal writers like Tom Shales and Alessandra Stanley are writing columns decrying the halftime show, you can see that this is a bigger issue around the country than with just us freepers and dittoheads. And for that matter, I've read more comments right here on the freeper board defending the halftime decadence than I've seen in any liberal newspaper!

A very articulate description of exactly how I feel. I just splashed my feelings on the board, but you took the time to make a cogent powerful case.

Blessings to you this day.

I think that's what he was trying to do, and if that's what you got out of it, good. But I think he did a terrible job in the trying. His sarcasm was misplaced and overdone, and he strongly repaired to what is his greatest weakness as a host, condescension toward his audience.

I don't mind sarcasm at times, but he rode it far too long for my tastes. There are plenty of us who have for a long time seen and fought the culture's degradation, and who don't need or appreciate being scolded like kids about the current state of affairs.

See SerpentDove's reply to me, #26, for a similar detailed view of Rush's statement here.

You know that Rush is against this sort of entertainment. In fact right now, 12:15, 3 Feb 04, Rush is talking about how the Super Bowl evil-doers will eventually be lecturing us on how square we are, and how we need to lighten up.
So that should eliminate your worries.
