TIKRIT, Iraq – An American soldier was killed and 12 wounded in a rocket attack Sunday on an Army base in central Iraq, the U.S. military said.

The rocket landed inside a logistics support base of the 4th Infantry Division in Balad, 50 miles south of the division's headquarters in Tikrit, an Army statement said.

It said two of the injured soldiers were in serious condition. After the attack, troops detained 16 people including four women for questioning, the statement said.

Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein, is part of the Sunni Triangle, where most of the anti-U.S. insurgency has taken place.

The death raised to 523 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in the conflict in Iraq.

Good points but not the point.

My concern was posting on the Breaking News side bar, not posting.

The style of the presentation presents more problems for our political cause than the "harm" done to "conservative" families seeking information. These families can monitor the News/Current Events posts and receive the information.

Our Breaking News sidebar oft times resmbles the headlines at DU where every lost combatant is used as a nail in the administartion's coffin.

Again I appreciate your point(s) of view(s). They are valid points but they don't invalidate my observation.

It's almost 11pm in Balad....I have not heard anything...Mike knows Im addicted to FR and a news hound...he will let me know when he can...thank you for all your prayers for Mike and all our troops...they need them.

Just a personal comment.

When my son's base was mortared a couple of weeks ago, I only knew about it because it was in Breaking News, and I saw it right away.

I got more support there, and information from good FRiends.

It was important to me that it was easily seen. JMO
