6 ft of Snow over Eastern Lake Ontario in Upstate NY

(Oswego-AP) -- A central New York town is nearing six feet of snow from the latest onslaught of squalls blowing off of Lake Ontario.

The National Weather Service says the town of Parish near the eastern end of the lake has received 69 inches of new snow over the past two days.

The city of Oswego has another two-plus feet of new snow today while nearby Fulton is buried under about five feet of snow that has fallen over the past week. Futon officials have asked people to offer their vacant lots so highway crews have a place to dump the snow they're removing from city streets.

The weather service says Oswego County is approaching the ten-foot snowfall total for the month of January alone.

Most schools in the area north of Syracuse closed for day, and the five-thousand students at Oswego State College are into their second snow day in a row.

Thanks for the lookup. I can't imagine that much snow at once *L* The most I've seen in person was 22 in, that was *thinks* 1998 I believe. Cause two years before that was the 17 in storm that the local forecasters swore up and down was only supposed to be 'an inch or less'...

Oh it probably is. The two prior weekends we hit 30 below and 20 below here. Then it warms up and we get this. Our forecast has an ice storm and freezing rain on Monday. Buy stock in Niagara-Mohawk our utility company even thought the B*st*rds are always pleading poverty.

This post brings back memories. I spent a few years in the North Country (Star Lake).

"Remember last year they didn't close school because it wasn't snowing yet? As soon as my kids got to school the bottom fell out. My son didn't get home till 6pm by firemen and EMP's cause I could not get up the ridge to White House."

Remember it VERY well, because that was the day that I took off in the motorhome at 8am with my Golden for FLORIDA. Stopped for gazz at the Pilot in Calhoun GA, and the guy at the next pump tells me that one of his reps can't make it back from Nashville because of the EIGHT inches of show. I said, "WHAT snow??" Later that evening I docked at an RV park on the FL state line and called home and heard all about it. Where I was at the time it was about 70.

It eventually caught up with us, though.

Heh, thats the Trans Labrador Highway up here in Canada, goes through northern Queerbeck and Newfoundland. A place so lonely the government is testing a pilot project to loan travelers satellite phones when they travel the highway, since if they get stuck, there is no cell service and no one may go by for days.

Lake Ontario never freezes

I didn't know that. Why is that?

You can't fool FReepers.

Someone sent me this link. I fiddled with one of the photos for a while and then saw this thread.

I looks lonely. How could anyone live there?

Ontario, even though it is the smallest of the Great Lakes is one of the deepest. That is why it does not freeze over.

Looks like the winters that I remember growing up just north of Baldwinsville.

My mom lives out on Smokey Hollow Rd. just outside of Baldwinsville, my sister lives over in Radisson, and My brother lives in Liverpool. I live in south Texas.

My sister called Thursday and was telling me that I was missing a fine winter in the upstate N.Y. snowbelt.

Stay warm and safe.

I was a transplanted Southerner to Syracuse for 17 years. Have been back home for 5. I just checked the cams at Marshall Street & Clinton Square. I do miss the heavy snows, when life stopped and all was quiet in the world. I don't miss not seeing a blade of grass for months and months (and months and months and months). Nor do I miss the Februarys with just 24 hours of blue skies. But I do miss Syracuse.

I bet Dave Eichorn is in his glory right now.

Yeah those are the pics :) BTW I should correct my bad Geography I meant Nova Scotia not Newfoundland, since as far as I know there is no bridge to the mainland from Newoundland.

I wouldn't mind visting that stretch of highway though, the snow looks so cool.
