Two Military Commands Line Up for Super Bowl Protection
American Forces Press Service ^ | Jan. 30, 2004 | U.S. Northern Command media release

Posted on 01/30/2004 10:51:36 AM PST by Calpernia

On Super Bowl Sunday Feb. 1, the U.S. military will be hard at work protecting players and fans alike.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command are taking appropriate actions to deter and defeat any possible threats against Sunday's game and festivities, according to Mike Perini, both commands' director of public affairs.

"The NORAD and USNORTHCOM staffs have reviewed possible scenarios surrounding Sunday's game and will be monitoring the various information sources to ensure they maintain the best possible situational awareness," said Perini.

He noted that the two commands maintain constant vigilance and plan and execute "prudent measures to deter, prevent or defeat those who would wish to do us harm."

In their homeland defense roles, NORAD and NORTHCOM join local, state, federal and other military efforts to protect Americans' rights and freedoms.

The binational Canadian and American NORAD is responsible for the air defense of North America. Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, NORAD has scrambled fighters or diverted air patrols more than 1,700 times to respond to possible air threats. It has also combined with Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft and air-to-air-refueling tankers to fly more than 34,000 sorties.

Established in the Sept. 11 aftermath, NORTHCOM provides military assistance to civil authorities in line with U.S. laws and as directed by the president or secretary of defense. Such assistance is always in support of a lead federal agency, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

I would submit that our streached too damn thin military has absolutely no place protecting bread and circuses. These sports oriented morons make millions let them pay for private security.

You Know, it is not really the sports stars they are protecting. It's not even the fans at the game. I am sure the NFL is beefing up security. It is the 1,000,000 plus that live in the area. Those that would be collateral damage to the terrorist. Did you not read Sum of all Fears. (NOTE: I did not say see the movie)

I remember an episode of "JAG" following 9/11 where Harm (CDR Harmon Rabb on the show) was given "two tickets" to the Super Bowl.

The cosying up to him to have the "second ticket" for the game was hysterical and we didn't see, until the very end that the "two tickets" were in an F-14, flying protecting over the stadium. I'm not sure the view was that good from 3,000 feet!

But it was a fun sideline story in the show.

That said, everytime I hear jets or choppers here in No. VA, there's a part of me that suddenly jolts, recognizing that they are here to provide extra protection for the President and DC. Then I relax, realizing that they ARE here for protection, and that we are safer for their being here.

Thank God for every person serving in the Military.

Those helo's and jets are there because we let the terrorists win, and make us afraid of more attacks.

You can say it's smart to do it, for safety's sake.

But we had safety once without them.
