Maybe he is angling for the Libertarian voters- a big step toward open bordersI am a card-carrying, dues-paying member of the LP, and they lost me on this after 9/11. Most libertarians that I know feel the same way.

before I forget:
FYI for freepers
When you hear immigration lawyers speaking in the next months be alert to the two types of illegals.
Overstays are those who were inspected by border patrol and have overstayed the time limit on their I-94 card.
"smuggled ins" are those who crossed the boder without inspection. Without inspection also includes the use of false ID.
Immigration lawyers I have seen on TV interviews attempt to confuse all with the "overstay" since they deal most with them.
We also need to go after immigration lawyers who are gaming the system. Ie having a 17 year old declared a dependent to stay deportation and keep the whole family present.

Dear Mr. Bush,
You can never out-pander the Slave Party.
Never.
Compromise is pointless. They must be defeated.
The conservative principles you espouse are the only way.
Try governing by them for a change; they work. They're popular too. Remember 1984?
Respectfully,
CO

There are three things to bear in mind on this subject:
1) The first public act John Kerry ever did in his life was to work on Ted Kennedy's Senatorial Campaign in 1962.
2) Ted Kennedy almost single-handedly caused the immigration fiasco we have had in this country for the last thirty-five years with his championing of the 1965 Immigration Act (Hart Cellar Act).
3) John Kerry owes his political life to Ted Kennedy and has been his rubber stamp throughout his career, voting Kennedy's way more than 94% of the time. (100% of the time for the last several years.)

This is my understanding of the process.
In order to be eligible to naturalize you must be legally present in the US for a minimum of 5 years in an immigrant status, ie. lawfully admitted for permanent residence LAPR.
This excludes all non-immigrants such as visitors, overstays, illegals etc.
LAPR time is considered good time towards naturalization all other time is considered bad time. So if a person entered as a visitor and overstayed their visa for 5 years and was then permitted to adjust their status to that of a LAPR (which happens all the time) the 5 year good time clock for naturalization would start ticking at that point, the point of adjustment of status to that of a LAPR.
There are additional requirements such as ability to speak English, an understanding of American history and a clean criminal record, however these requirements are also under constant attack as well.
Kerry just wants to through out the entire process and stack the DNCs voter ranks.

There must be a huge number of illegal aliens registered to vote. I KNOW illegals vote in the USA.I know they do too. So do dead people, aka the cemetary vote. The voting system is so damned corrupt.

I don not plan to vote for a Dem; not sure about a third party.
But with this issue, and now increasing funds for the NEA, etc. I just am not motivated to work as hard to GOTV; with many other precinct committee people like me who are getting frustrated, Bush could lose.

How to make real immigration reform happen with one sacrifice:
(s) A law is passed allowing all limosine liberats, democrat fat cats to keep their maids, nannys, and misc. home servants. But only those particualr people. The democrats would then be indifferent to the rest of them.(/s)

You've solved it! And that really the truth of the situation.
Do you think any of these people ever come into contact with illegal aliens other than when they come to clean or mow their lawns?

almost right. If yo over stay, you have to hide for ten years before you can get legalized. From the date of the issuance of the green card (pink really) starts the five years.
As for ability to speak english. There are 250 questions possible. 20 will be asked. The questions and answers are available as public knowledge. The english requirement is that of a functional illiterate these days.

ever have an illegal show you a voter registration card?No one has ever questioned me on whether I was the person I claimed to be. I've never had to show ID when I vote. I'm dark haired and dark eyed, and even though I'm Irish, I have been mistaken for Hispanic on occasion. I don't think the polling officials are allowed to ask for a registration card. Of course not, it might violate someone's rights. /sarcasm

There are students in the USA on student visas who vote. Guess from where. I guarantee they are not voting for Bush in 2004.

Something I would like to see added to the Bush proposal would be something like an enforced minimum of five years before an illegal can try to get government aid.

...or religious leader.
What would happen if every citizen had to have their passport to vote? Since it is federal, the onus would be on the federal governemnt.
