Governments thoughout history have funded patriotic art and memorials.

I would prefer that this government be an exception to the rule of history. There has never been a nation like this before. But the statists among us are determined to send us down the same road as every other empire in history. This NEA crap is just a symptom of a lingering disease.

And if it's gonna be used for pro American propaganda, how are they going to convince all the radical leftist 'artists' who are currently sucking off the teat to either dislodge their lips or change their political outlook for the good of the country?

No, but it makes perfect sense that the government should spend money to encourage patriotism, does it not?

Alright, if this is true, I am not going to support Bush on this one. It will be disgusting if true.

What the hell will he do next, give the biggest increase in decades to PBS?

Golly.

What good is a war if it's defending a socialist nation?

It seems to me that the Republicans are much more conservative in Congress when they do not have the presidency.

Mark my words. Every idiot here that is whining and saying they won't vote for Bush will be the biggest whiners from 2005-2009/2013 when Kerry is President.

Why, we'll fund different artists.

After all- Robert Mapplethorpe seems to have found his own audience perfectly well. The artists who, presumably have the most problems are conservative ones.

It won't be presnted this way, of course- but the NEA board can be stacked with conservatives.

It's called "triangulation". Worked like a charm for Clinton.

It did? I thought Clinton was like, impeached, or something.

Again, we're talking about a few million dollars here. Nothing, in government terms.

"In any case, within the scheme of the Federal Budget, whatever is proposed will be pocket change."

Yeah, a few million here, a few million there, pretty soon it starts to add up to real money....

The 1996 GOP platform called for abolishing the Department of Education and ending "federal meddling in schools.", it also called for eliminating the departments of Commerce, Energy, and Housing and Urban Development and the National Endowment for the Arts.

They removed all of this from the GOP platform in 2000, and have been moving further to the left ever since.

The $56 billion in total discretionary funding for federal education is an all-time high. Under President Bush, in just three years the Education Department’s overall funding will have increased by $13.8 billion.

Federal education spending has increased by 118 percent from 1996 (the first fiscal year under a Republican majority in Congress) to 2002. The President’s FY 2004 builds on that increase.

Hey, I will still vote for Bush. I love the guy; I even defended his immigration proposal on this site.

But this is just silly if true.

Look, we've got to win the bloody election before anything else can be done.

We are starting to be AFRAID of what else he wants to do after he gets re-elected!

Of course. And Democrats are much more liberal when in opposition.

Being in opposition gives you the freedom to adopt an ideology whole. The same can't be said for those in government.
