Heard that about the 80s.....but it would seem then that the logical place to check would have been Niger after all. All those who thought the very idea was a joke won't even admit they were misguided. Be nice if Bush came out fighting the way Blair does. But then he wouldn't be Dubya. I just hope he realizes this is WAR.......them against us and the peace loving world.

Wow, I hadn't seen or heard that comment from Kay........thanks for keeping us in the loop. AMAZING!!!

Kay is a man of principle and isn't going to be used for partisan political purposes. He learned from the last time he made a statement that was taken totally out of context and came ready for the dems.

Kay made a most important point with regard to nuclear weapons and other countries. He said the MOST important thing was to divine INTENT. That was the difficult part but that there was no doubt about the INTENT of Saddam Hussein.

I cannot wait for this man to write his book. I will be first in line to buy it.

.....but it would seem then that the logical place to check would have been Niger after all. All those who thought the very idea was a joke won't even admit they were misguided.

I blame the media for allowing the dems to direct the reporting.

Tenet said himself that Joe Wilson stated he was approached in 2001 by Iraqi agents about opening trade with Niger. Wilson assumed they were after uranium since the other export is some agricultural product that escapes my mind at the moment. Joe Wilson leaves this salient fact out of his current day rantings, and any journalist worth his salt would bring it up every time Wilson acts like the idea was absurd.

George Tenet said this in his statement of July.

And while we're on the subject, my pet theory is the yellowcake/SOTU speech and the sexed up document/Blair attack were simultaneously launched to bring down Blair and Bush.

To wit: Both allegations were made and calls for Blair to resign and over here the word impeachment was immediately floated.

Before Joe Wilson wrote his NY Times op-ed revealing his Niger tea-sipping visit, there were articles in the BBC (coincidence?) citing an anonymous "CIA Official" telling their reporter that Bush was wrong on Iraq/uranium and this "official" said this was known because a former diplomat had proven it! That is a flat out lie and no real "CIA Official" with America's best interests at heart would be telling a foreign journalist such misrepresentations of the facts.

At that same time we had the Gilligan pieces rolling out about the sexed up document, but that got boluxed up when their government actually took umbrage at lies being published and the subsequent hearings leading up to today's events.

I really think the two episodes are interwined.

I agree. Nevermind that Saddam threw out the inspectors in the last ignoble years of her horrible husband's regime.

The Clintons are so exposed on this thing, so is the entire Left.

The more hypocrisy, hate and unpatriotism they show the better for us.

I heard him say we need to keep looking. But I also heard him say WE WERE ALL WRONG. The two facts are not irreconcilable.

He said we were PROBABLY all wrong specifically ABOUT LARGE STOCKPILES.

He also said that Iraq was potentially more dangeous to us than we thought as we went in last spring.

I hope that there are some American names on that list of Saddam bribes, but these guys don't need to be paid to support any anti-American despot.

To verify Kay's comments to Kennedy see my post #51 transcribing Kay's words:

post 51

We were almost all wrong. Senator Kennedy knows, we talked much before the war and he knows we thought Iraq had WMDS.

I know, it's staggering how they always align themselves with the people who hate us. Let's face it, they prefer Osama to George Bush.

The pre-Bush intelligence folks was the manipulation source.

Kay stated that the decline of human intelligence began back in he Carter administration.

IMHO Kay has been one of the most intelligent people to testify before any committee. Needless to say, he's head and shoulders above the hatemongering dems.

******

He certainly came across as extremely intelligent. I loved the way he used phrases like "..not with the constant certainty of PI.." or "the laws of physics" in responding to the dim senators who were trying to elicit a political comment from him.

"WE" = "CIA, UNSCOM intel estimates and statements that go back to the 1990s"

The Democrats are trying to tag this on Bush.

And yet, underlying the media story of not finding 'stockpiles' is the reality of saddam's continued pursuit and efforts in the WMD arena, and the uncovering of active programs.

-------

The notes underline the importance to Saddam of Iraq's biological weapons program: "Situation is complicated by shift of bio program from Al Hakim to Tuwaitha in 96 [ie after Hussein Kamil defected], which fooled the UN because Tuwaitha was seen as a nuclear site at [sic] looked at by IAEA and not UNSCOM."

Is Kay suggesting that his group has found significant aspects of Iraq's BW program that were unknown to UNSCOM, so well was this program hidden?

Regarding the nuclear progran, "Kay said people still misunderstand the aluminum tube issue. Never able to track overall progress in centrifuge design after 1991. Knew Iraq used aluminum tubes for rockets, but Iraq steadily upgraded specifications after 1999 for tubes that were never delivered but could be used for centrifuges. Said government that opposed war (Germany or France) blocked the shipment and warned US could be used for centrifuges."

The Sunday Times (UK), today, carries a story, "Spies close in on Saddam's ailing terror mastermind," by Richard Miniter. It includes more information on Iraq's BW program:

" Two top Iraqi scientists, codenamed Charlie and Alpha, are helping the coalition to learn more about Iraq's anthrax programme, Kay said. The Iraqis had made shocking innovations in the milling and drying processes needed to weaponise anthrax. 'Almost every week there is a new discovery that boggles your mind,' Kay said."

"What you fail to figure into the equation, is the reality that the economy could have been much stronger without the Clinton Bill of 1993."

Actually, that is certainly the case. I studied this matter - if you look at the stock markets, they fell back in 1994, anticipating weaker economic growth. In 1995 it rebounded and the real bull market started.

Any hyperbole over the size of the impact of Clinton tax hikes doesnt negate that the economic impact was in fact negative, and the fiscal impact (as measure by estimated deficits) was in fact not helpful in reducing the deficit by much.

"One thing I know for sure is, the 93 Bill was a hindrance, and Clinton should be thanking his lucky stars, for the way things turned out."

A GOP Congress in 1995 saved us fiscally.

"I s Kay saying that Saddamn did NOT have weapons programs, or saying they having found a large stash of product? Because if Saddamn had the programs, and he did, if he didn't have a ready supply of product squirreled away, he could have."

Yes, Kay report outlined in Sept that Saddam had programs in chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

People argue this every which way. They'll say the boom was thanks to the GOP Congress. Then again they'll discount the whole boom as a bubble. Whatever serves the political goal. The plain fact is that taxes were raised and the economy still prospered. Rush predicted doom and gloom and it didn't happen. He was wrong. It doesn't matter what excuses we use later to explain it away. I like having my taxes cut. I like a strong economy. But I learned from that experience that Rush is not a reliable source of economic commentary.

I agree with you. And I wonder how much time BJClinton spends at his home in Ireland. Probably enough to get that attack coordinated.
