We don't know it was pepper spray, just that it was something that made people unable to breath. Wow, if that's the case I am really surprised more of a fuss hasn't been made about it.
Never mind box cutters, how did the terrorists smuggle knock-out gas onto that flight?

That's a very good question -- and in a quantity to disable a planeload of passengers.
Even pre-9-11, they were watching for mace. I had a tiny, 0.2 oz or thereabouts pepper spray with me, which I used to carry, I even had a permit, which was required in CA, but at one of my trips airport security took it away from me.
And here are the terrorists probably smuggled obviously a lot more.

disguised as right guard or hair spray most likely.

It's not even clear how many had box cutters vs other kinds of knives. I read another story saying a few may have had 'leatherman' type of folding knives. It is known some of the terrorists bought them and they were not found with the rest of their belongings later. Knives with less than 4 inch blades were not prohibited on planes at the time (pre-911). Nobody knows exactly what weapons they had, now it sounds like knives and mace but no gun (as previously reported one of the flights).

"Never mind box cutters, how did the terrorists smuggle knock-out gas onto that flight?" you carry the ammonia, I'll carry the bleach, ok? (no wonder they are suspicious about liquids now)
