PAUL O'NEILL WON'T GO AWAY

Fired former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill is in the news again. He now says that he stands by his criticism of the inner workings of the Bush administration, but regrets his "vivid language" is detracting from serious issues. He says that he hopes "this book will cause young people to aspire to improve our political process." Interesting. Not sure that that has to do with calling the President of the United States "a blind man in a room full of deaf people," but why sweat the small stuff.

And speaking of President Bush, he has finally made a statement about the Paul O'Neill controversy, and this is an absolute classic. Speaking at a dinner on Saturday night, the President said "What a stellar crowd. It looks like the index of Paul O'Neill's book. Let me say something about that book. Paul said I was disengaged because he talked to me for 45 minutes and I didn't say a word. I wasn't disengaged. I was bored as hell and my mother told me never to interrupt."

It's hard to argue with that. Politicians really should tell the truth more

I caught that speech and Q&A by Suskind on CSPAN2, book/author presentations, as well.

This man gave me the creeps. His cynicism and horrid story of how he and O'Neill got together, his willingess to use O'Neill (to get at President Bush - more than overt), adhis bravado about it all (BRAGGING about it), just left me cold.

And when he ( Suskind) got to the part of O'Neill getting the Treasury documents Suskind wanted, and spoke of how O'Neill LEFT the 19,000 whatever (pages?) in envelopes in the Watergate Hotel and Apt. bldg lobby with the hotel security doorman, whatever ( yikes! - cuz' Suskind said O'Neill never even looked at them---what an insidious misuse of possibly critical documentation) for Suskind to pick up...well.....how O'Neill EVER led a company ( yes-I know he was a stickler for detail, with his every move annotated) or served our nation as Treasury Sec. is hard to swallow and flat out alarming.

O'Neill has suffered from being fired and hadnled it like a first grader in terms of revenge- undeserved and totally childish.

Suskind suffers that standard liberal disease, aversion to truth and willingness to do anything to get the goal accomplished. Neither demonstrate the character necessary to earn respect. Glad O'Neill was fired, knowing his character, I am only sorry it took so long to boot him.

Sometimes kind people will offer an individual a chance to prove themselves, even if their character in the past did not indicate it. They often prove themselves in short order. But you give them the chance anyway.

Because O'Neill did not support tax cuts more vigorously.

President Bush is obviously engaged. I suppose you mean to imply that by bringing O'Neill on board in the first place he demonstrated what you call disengagedness, but the facts reveal quite the opposite. He made a mistake as to O'Neill's fit with the team and made the executive decision to rectify it.

Every time I get irritated by some Bush proposal (or by some distorted report about a Bush proposal) that rubs me the wrong way, I just remember the chilling, disgusting nightmare of the previous eight years when parents visiting Washington DC were ashamed to point out the White House to their kids, and when "stroke of the pen, law of the land, kinda cool", ruled the day. Dubya is awesome. It's really not hard to like the man and very easy to trust him. Dubya is a leader.

It is not a "bit." He was at a dinner noted for the slicing and dicing of guests (much like the WH Correspondents) and it was his turn to make fun of people and that's what he did. He also said something about Dean's scream.

I just saw a bit of Anderson Cooper mentioning this on CNN. Of course, he 'reported' it like the President meant it literally. Saying how Bush verified O'Neill's statement that O'Neill did all the talking for their first meeting and Bush just sat there and then he said Bush said it was because he was bored. Then the S.O.B. went on to say in his 'report' that he finds economics, the economy 'boring', for the 'boring' people, along those lines. It was really nasty and shows you CNNs got problems.
