Navy relieves submarine commander of duties Tuesday January 27, 2004 GROTON, Conn. (AP) The Navy has relieved a submarine commander of his duties, saying it lost confidence in his abilities to command.

Cmdr. David J. Bartholomew Jr. assumed command of the Jimmy Carter about a year ago. The Seawolf-class submarine is still under construction at Electric Boat in Groton.

Bartholomew would have overseen the submarine's joining the fleet in 2005.

The Navy released few details about the incident.

Commanders are typically dismissed when the ``command climate'' of a ship is threatened, said Lt. Philip R. Rosi, a Navy spokesman.

``The decisions made by Cmdr. Bartholomew led to, or could have led to, the degradation of good order and discipline,'' Rosi said.

Bartholomew was temporarily reassigned to the staff of Submarine Group Two at the base, pending further disciplinary or administrative action, Rosi said.

Bartholomew, a native of Medfield, Mass., is a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He made two demanding Mediterranean deployments as captain of the USS Annapolis.

Aaahhh....So it was his extracurricular activities that got him in trouble. How could a guy work so hard for half of his life to command a submarine just to turn around and give it right back for something as stupid as driving drunk with his mistress while out on the town? Crazy.

What I would like to know is why the real Jimmy Carter left the Navy. He was hand picked by Adm Rickover and one would think he was on the fast track. Maybe he couldn't commande either?

No doubt..... seems to happen a lot, especially at the Groton Naval Subbase. Same thing happened with a CDR Richard Testyon, previous XO on the Pennsylvania... messing around with no less, an ENLISTED wife while our fine men, and her husband was out to sea. He stays behind running "supplies" for the wife left behind. This one, although denied, ran all across the base. They are all dogs and pigs in white.

Let me guess... the USS Jimmy Carter is an unarmed sub designed to travel the world and disparage U.S. policy?

LOL nice one.

I had heard Carter was a nuke, if so, that makes some sense. My husband (command info on his profile) said that most of the nukes he's worked with have all the book sense in the world, but no common sense whatsoever.

Our congressman from the district that includes Groton is a Republican (finally!) - Simmons was a Vietnam vet and army Reservist, and served in the CIA for 10 years.

You're forgetting Connecticut's senior Senator Chris Dodd. Dodd's a long time friend of the Kennedy clan ... in fact his father was very close to Joe Kennedy, and that goes way back to pre-WWII. At one point I was on a nodding acquaintance terms with Chris Dodd ... he wintered his sailboat in the same Marina that I had mine. At that time, pre-Clinton, I was apolitical for the most part, so his party affiliation was of no concern ... I don't remember specifically, but I believe I voted for him once while residing in CT.
