FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Lionel Tate, the teen who killed a 6-year-old girl and became the youngest defendant in the nation to be locked away for life, was released yesterday after three years behind bars.
Circuit Judge Joel Lazarus ordered Lionel to be freed without bail, a month after an appeals court threw out the boy's conviction because his mental competency was not evaluated before trial. Lionel has since struck a plea bargain that will mean no further jail time.

Loony as heck. I have to live in the same county (Broward) and hear all the sob stories about this young killer. Justice is not done by such "mercy". This is not justice for the family of the murdered girl.

I wonder how many he's going to kill before he's locked up again.

You can kill a 6 year old girl and its business as usual. Whoever says crime doesn't pay never met Lionel Tate.

I was thinking the same thing... wondering how many more people he was gonna kill ("accidentally" or not) before he's locked up again.
I don't live in Florida anymore, but if someone like that breaks into my home while I'm there, I'm not gonna sit there and sympathize with his horrible childhood (I had a rough one too)... I'm gonna at least attempt to defend myself, preferably by plugging his @$$ before he plugs mine.

The average actual time served in prison for all murderers is only 96 months. Most murderers do not spend much time in prison.
If you think this case is unusual, if you think we put murderers (or any other violent criminal) away in prison for a long time, you are confused - you must be thinking of drug offendors instead of violent criminals.
Average time served in prison for murder is 96 months, manslaughter 49 months, rape 73 months, robbery 48 months, etc.
(Bureau of Justice Statistics, Trends in State Parole 1990-2000, USA Today, October 24, 2001, page 1)
We have over 2 million people in prison , our prisons are full, but they are full of drug offenders and other non violent offendors.
There is no reason why this guy should be spending a lot of time in prison, if we let all the other murders, adult murders, go free in just 8 years.
