Dean Deli Debt
West Des Moines, January 26, 2004 - They came to town, tried to get your vote and then left for New Hampshire.
But one presidential candidate may have left a big bill for a small West Des Moines deli. The campaigns ate, drank and slept at dozens of places across town. For the most part they paid their bills.
This is how it's supposed to work inside the Brown Bag Deli. Owner Scott Hoffman makes you a turkey sandwich and then you pay for it.
Scott will tell you deliveries are a little different, especially one back on the 16th of this month. That was a big order for this small business of four employees. 200 brown bag specials...with turkey, roast beef, ham and veggie sandwiches. The total...$963.01.
As he headed out that day, Scott remembered this customer has paid its bills late a couple times before. So he promised delivery this time with one condition, "c.o.d."
He showed up at the customer's downtown office just in time for lunch. The Dean headquarters was utter chaos. But he couldn't find anyone who'd pay him. They said try the other building next door. Same answer next door, try the other building. Scott went back and forth for 20 minutes. Nobody would pay.
He just assumed they would pay in good faith. After all, Dick Gephardt's campaign paid its lunch bills on time. And Howard Dean has thousands of followers in Iowa. Can't one of them give Scott his money?
We tried all day to reach Howard Dean's people-- no comment from them yet. By the way, Scott Hoffman says he considered himself a possible Dean supporter before the incident. He's since changed his mind.
We're checking unpaid debts from other campaigns and haven't found any yet.

If the moron deli owner was actually considering voting for Dean, I have no sympathy for him. Any business owner who votes for Rats has a death wish - for his business. I suppose he would like paying more taxes, trying to avoid violating more government regulations, and providing more government-mandated employee benefits. Whenever I meet a small business owner who is a Rat, I know they are truly ignorant, and any business acumen that they appear to have is probably just blind luck.

Dean has it down pat, evidently.

Tell Mr. Scott to go to Vermont where he can get re-paid with some of Deans "free" healthcare...While he's there he can even marry his brother if he's so inclined.

200 brown bag specials...with turkey, roast beef, ham and veggie sandwiches : $963.01.
Getting shafted for $963.01 from the Howard Dean Campaign , and realizing you are a complete idiot for considering voting for the fool : priceless.

I heard on Fox News Channel today.... yesterday... that Clark led the Dim Poll in Oklahoma.... haha.. my condolences Gratefully accepted. But I live in Texas now.
Most of the Democrats in Oklahoma are in the SE, down in Little Dixie, next to Arkansas. Or around the faculty lounges of the college campuses.
Actually, a Clark win in Oklahoma would only serve to further muddle the Democrat primary picture. On balance, it would be a "good thing", I should think.
There's no way, however, for Clark or any Democrat to beat Bush in Oklahoma in November.

Another article on FR was showing President Bush's chances of taking different States in the election.
IIRC,the very best states for the President were Texas,Mississippi,Oklahoma..........

Looks like Hillary's candidate forum on dealing with workers in the restaurant industry is really having having an impact.

When they wouldn't pay on delivery he should have left with the sandwiches, taken them to one of the other candidates HQs and sold them as deadbeat Dean sandwiches. The PR alone would have been worth the $1k to a Kerry and the subsequent press coverage would have been good advertising for the deli.

Well stated. I never understood how any business owner could be a low life Democrat. It's against their own interest.
I worked for the Loews Corp once in their hotel business. The Tisches are big libs. But they sure treated their workers like crap on the lower levels like maids, laundry personnel, etc.
But you can bet the executives were living high on the hog. I was the property accountant on their $4.5 million renovation of the Vanderbilt Plaza they bought (for a song, the previous company ran it into the ground) and they sure didn't mind charging my budget for expensive airfare for "impromptu meetings" at the property.
I finally put my foot down and said, "if you blow hards can't handle these issues on the f'ing phones, you can drop dead. I'm NOT going to pay ONE MORE DIME for $2,000 round trip tickets from New York to Nashville at the drop of the hat just because some moron wants to come look at the fabric choice on the bedspreads...I'll send you pictures".
I actually won that argument. Morons. They wasted money like crazy but whined about spending $4,000 on needed banquet tables or $10,000 on new linen when our banquet department was selling everything at 100% capacity. Oh, but $50,000 for fancy millwork planters in the lobby is no problem because Jonathan Tisch wanted them.
Oh, and then there was the fancy hydraulic elevator they wanted put in the lobby to go down one floor into the basement where they took $500K from my budget to give to Sfuzzi's...some hoity toity New York restaurant concept they just "had to have" in Nashville. We told them you can't do that in Nashville, we are on solid rock and the water table is high. But, of course, we are just dumb hicks and the said "do it!".
And they were wrong again. It took 6 weeks and their "budget" of $60K turned into $250K because it took more equipment to dig into the rock and, bingo, we hit the water table and spent $75K alone on pumping the water out.
And then Sfuzzi's closed down in less than 8 months and the place stayed empty until we got a Ruth's Chris to lease the place.
Real geniuses, those left wing, New York Democrats like Lawrence Tisches spoiled rotten kids who all got to run a piece of the company. Lawrence was the head of CBS for decades and they had a lot of CBS stock. But this is the hypocrisy I loved - they owned CNA Insurance (denying claims and red lining neighborhoods), Lorrilard TOBACCO - the liberal hate weed, Marathon OIL - talk about Halliburton...etc. They also owned Bullova watches and at least I got to buy them as an employee for only 25% of retail...made nice Christmas gifts.
But as usual, they were typical left wing, Democrat hypocrites.

P.S. In my years in the luxury hotel business, I had a rule as Controller: NO CREDIT to ANY political candidate...especially Democrats.
They just never paid their bills. NEVER! I had one Sales Director that was a Hart loving moron back in 1984 and she signed off on a contract with NO deposit and gave them credit UNAPPROVED.
They stiffed us for over $5,000. I threatened to take it out of her check but management didn't want to go that far. Idiots.
Oh, and then there was the time at the Loews Vanderbilt, you'll love this, that I was sitting in my office and I get a call from the front desk. Albert Gore, Sr. and his wife want to check in for the weekend. I told the desk clerk, "so? check them in".
"No", she says, "they want direct billing". I said NO, they put down a credit card like everyone else. "But no", I'm told...he's "ex-Sen. Al Gore, Sr.!". I said, "I don't care if he's Jesus f'ing Christ...without a credit card he can go down the street to the Holiday Inn".
But of course, the butt kissing General Manager was called in and he "guaranteed" them that we'd bill them. Idiot.
Not only did they stiff us for the room, they WIPED OUT THE MINI-BAR. And I mean they took everything. So we billed them for everything at retail along with the room. Thirty days go by. Sixty days go by. Then I told the A/R manager to contact them. Mrs. Gore says, "I didn't know the stuff in the mini-bar wasn't free!". Yeah right, and I don't know your worthless son isn't a tree!
And the entire time they keep insisting that we understand that they are "Sen. Albert Gore Sr. and wife" like I cared. Oh, I forgot I was supposed to bow down and pray to them like the Gods they thought they were.
I had enough. I got on the phone and said, "you pay the damn bill or I'm sending a notice to Dun and Bradstreet and then calling our credit collection agency". The bimbo mother of Al Gore, JR. mailed back the mini-bar contents and demanded a credit.
Talk about white trash. This was 1993...and 7 years later he thought he was elected President?
Worthless human scum!
