I’m positive cannabis was the cause; I became paranoid as soon as I started smoking it.

Sounds like a heavy-duty guilt trip for breaking the law to me, not the herb. Since she is "positive" about the cause of her mental problems, she must be an M.D. or D.O. with a specialty in Psychiatry I presume??

As a past college user (prior to my LEO days), I have first hand knowledge it is not physically addicting (it's also a medical fact), but like abuse of any LEGAL mind affecting substance, it can have adverse effects on studies and behavior.

I stopped in my sophomore year in college "cold turkey" and never had the desire to light up again. Definitely more "reefer madness" propaganda.

The most dangerous two drugs in society are legal.

Sorry to all you folks that think everything should be outlawed, but as an ex LEO veteran, IMO, the WOD is wrong. Pot prohibition has destroyed more lives than pot ever could, even if you believe it is harmful. Funny how we never learn from History. [Prohibition]

I became paranoid as soon as I started smoking it. I’ve known hundreds of people who smoke it; all of them have some kind of paranoia or a problem, whether they recognise it or not.’

Sometimes it's a pain in the ***. A few years ago in my running around days I had a lot of friends that were drinkers and a few that were stoners. I had 4 or 5 people in my car one night going to a party down by the river and the girl in the front with me was a stoner and I came upon a big puddle, the stoner girl didn't want to go through it but the otheres didn't mind and I went ahead and gave it hell and got through it. After getting through it the stoner girl insisted I take her back to town and drop her off because she "couldn't take things like that anymore". I couldn't believe it.

Although this news comes from UK this sounds like your typical Canadian.

Laid back. Relaxed. Ready to just let it flow. But, on the other hand, totally paranoid about what the United States is doing behind his back, or might do, or might even think about doing.

Hey, Mexicans have a lot of that too! Go out in the villages and they are really laid back until somebody tries to jump there women then they get paranoid, and if you're lucky you get out of town before he starts thinking that Americans want his women.

MJ mus'be our secret weapon, eh?!

Gee, let me guess how this thread turns out - a bunch of dopers in denial attacking the credibility of the article by besmearching the person and the content of the article in order to try and lessen the impact of said article and in the hopes that the 15 billionth thread going pro pot by the usual suspects will change anyone's minds on the subject as though hearing the childishness yet again, we should suddenly experience a moment of light rather than ignore the threads for a further few months till we stop in to see the dopers at it the next time. Grow up, get a job and obey the law. And thank you for your support.

From the article you exerpted:

In fact, there has long been evidence that cannabis is associated with mental illness. Some claimed, however, that it wasn’t clear whether cannabis caused people to become mentally ill or whether such people were already ill when they turned to the drug. Now, Professor Murray says a number of recent studies have proved beyond any doubt that cannabis is a cause of mental illness.

Specific cannabis receptors in the brain mean that the drug particularly affects logical thought, reasoning, judgment and memory, sensory perception, co-ordination and the production of emotions including pleasure.

Based on many of the responses to this thread, I'd have to agree.

I became paranoid as soon as I started smoking it.

Maybe that should have been a clue that you should have stopped. What a circus freak !

‘After a couple of weeks, I found it was addictive’, she said.

Significantly less addictive than alcohol, actually. Shall we ban that, too?

The person cited in this ridiculous article was a loser long before weed appeared in her life.

I'm a Scotch and beer man myself, but this is pure hogwash.

My 2 cents?

I smoked pot daily when I was 17. I quit cold turkey to enter the military. I got all of the withdrawal symtoms; insomnia, lack of appetite, DEPRESSION-- Major depression.

Maybe depression was latent in me? Maybe being so young I was hit harder by the effects? I don't know.

What I do know, is that that feeling/experience of depression has always been with me since. Like a smoker of cigarettes who quits, KNOWING what smoking feels like is always there and therefore so is the danger of relapse.

Say what you will, I believe if I had never started smoking pot, I would not have had such and intense depressive episode, and would not be prone to them currently.

Am I just like that, or did pot make some connection/disconnect that could have otherwise never surfaced? No clue, but I wish I never started...
