it likely had destroyer and/or submarine escort. in fact, I wouldn't be surpised if some US attack subs have been assigned to partrol the major cruise routes in florida/carribean.

I have a curiosity. How do underwater divers etc tolerate the 30 degree east coast waters? Ships on the East Coast in winter?
