The future looked so bright, and now it is so clouded. Why, even the White House could not bring itself to give up the Dean dream. The president's State of the Union address contained not one but two zings at Dean, although by the time the speech was delivered, Dean was no longer even a likely Democratic nominee. Bush said first that we are safer with Saddam Hussein caught and then added, to sustained applause, that America would never ask others (i.e. the United Nations) for permission to defend itself.

Twenty-four hours after Iowa, these rejoinders were already anachronisms.

Only the first one is out of date. The second criticism applies to any of the Dims with their constant cries of UN! UN!

Are you referring to the same Miguel Estrada that Bush has already nominated and who was refused an up-or-down vote by the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee?

I predicted a year ago that Edwards would win the nomintation, just based on his looks demeanor. It looked like I was wrong, but now I think I was right. He will come in third in NH, then win SC, and start rolling up the states in the midwest and west. He's the only one of the Dems that seems like a normal person. He's also the one the White House is most concerned about.

As for being a "pretty face" or an "empty suit" the media painted GWB as a "dumb frat boy". It didn't stop him from being elected.

the main caveat to that argument is that many say he is washed up in his own state.

i don't think many POTUS candidates if any have ever won if they could not carry their own state.

not to say he is not formidable otherwise for the reasons you said...

it's confusing....Lieberman is the only dwarf with any guts...he should switch and become a RINO at least. The fact that Gore snubbed him was pretty shi^^y.

Krauthammer is one of my favorites, I usually respect his analysis and agree with his conclusions. This time, however, I go further. I agree with and second every single word of this, in spades.

And having just watched the rerun of the Democrat debate in New Hampshire, I agree that the Dean dream is over.

However, if the Democrat nominee turns out to be John Kerry, who appropriately served as Lt. Governor to Dukakis, I would not necessarily abandon the prospects of the Bush victory of "biblical proportions." I know John Kerry personally from the beginning of his arrogant, left-wing, noblesse oblige at Yale in 1962-63.

I agree that Bush will not bury Kerry as deep as he would have buried Dean. But it still could be a landslide of the level of Dukakis, McGovern, and yes, Goldwater.
