New York's Mayor Bloomberg, a dedicated foe of tobacco doesn't like fat either - and he thinks it was fat and not a head injury that killed diet guru Dr. Robert Atkins. Chowing down at a New York firehouse, Bloomberg told firefighters "I don't believe that bull- s- - - - that [Atkins] dropped dead slipping on the sidewalk," Bloomberg said eating low fat bow-tie pasta, chicken and vegetables with FDNY Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta and a group of Brooklyn firefighters according to the New York Post.
Atkins, whose high protein, low carb diet is the rage across America reportedly died after he suffered severe head injuries in a fall on an icy Manhattan sidewalk last April.
When a firefighter asked the mayor what Atkins looked like when he met him, the mayor replied that "He was fat," adding that he spat out the food he was served at Atkins' home into a napkin because "it was inedible."
Dr. Stuart Trager, a consultant for Atkins, told the Post "We're baffled and dismayed by the mayor's comments. Our hope is that this was just a joke gone bad."
The low-carb, high-protein Atkins diet sparked a revolution, the Post reported, with millions of followers shunning pasta and bread for steaks and sausages. Critics have claimed the high amounts of fat in many recommended foods can lead to high cholesterol and heart attacks.

I am sure that the eskimos, finlanders, swedes, norwegians, laplanders, and the desert dwellers really grew up on those diets for thousands of years. Think bell curve. There are always outlying areas, but the vast majority of humanity is from temperate zones.

Now I'll have to have a hotdog next time I go to NYC. I'll send you my hospital bill! Seriously, the news went around asking people on the street why they ate the hotdogs still. Folks were saying that the vendors tend to be cleaner than most NYC delicatessens!

62 - "Now I'll have to have a hotdog next time I go to NYC. "
Ah,I didn't say that. I said when I was a kid, NYC had 'great' hotdogs. OH you kid!
Sorry, I haven't been to NYC for a few years, but last time I lived/worked there, the 'great' dogs, I didn't find.
However, I did just have an excellent local made Texas sausage for lunch. MMM MMM Good.

I heard Texas has the best barbecue but I don't want to start a war of the barbecues on FR.

The vast majority of Americans 'were' from England and Germany - Northern Europe.
No bananas and pineapples. Only fruits were (apples/pears) and vegies only in summer. Wheat basically only came with the Romans conquering N europe. Mostly meat eaters, cheese, milk, and preserved vegies like 'sauerkraut', dried apples, squash - pumpkins and I think Oats. Potatoes/tomatoes/corn came from new world.

You learn a lot about people by the fools they elect to lead them.

Yes, we have regular wars here locally - who in Texas makes the best BBQ and the best Chili in the WORLD. There are BBQ and chili cookoffs regularly.
And thanks to a great influx of Germans into Texas in the late 1800's, we have some truly great local sausage (but this is not so well known).

61 - Oh, and BTW, the vast majority of the Northern Europeans are of Viking descent, from the middle ages.

This is low-rent, to criticize a dead guy. What you really mean is it's low rent to criticize a dead guy that you LIKE. I assume you have no problem with people citicizing Hitler (a dead guy), Idi Amin (also dead), or Stalin (strangely enough, yes, he's dead too).

73 - OK, I'll be good.
We had a couple of liberals here once, but we sent them back up to Yankeeland, father and son. I think they wound up in Washington DC.

I'm not sure what point you were trying to make.
Atkins didn't do anything to Bloomberg, or to you.
And Bloomberg has a hell of a nerve calling anybody ELSE "fat."

LOL - NY pretzels, pretty good, but Ah, for really great pretzels you need to go to Germany, and eat them with German mustard. *whimper*
I lived in Germany for four years. I would KILL for some good authentic German food!
I liked the pretzel rolls even better than the pretzels - round rolls made out of prezel...stuff. I can't remember the proper term for 'em anymore. Mmmmmmm...

Yo dude, calm down, okay? I didn's say that Atkins did anything to me. As a matter of fact, his theories interest me. I'm just careful not to jump on any bandwagons.
My point was this - you are a hypocrite. Why? Because you say it is "low rent" to criticize a dead guy, yet you probably do it all the time. That's why I mentioned Hilter, Stalin, etc.
