California heating up?

Posted on 01/21/2004 1:56:19 PM PST by LittleJoe

I live in the Sierras about 100 miles north of Sacramento. The water from my well has turned hot. The county inspector just left. He said he has been inspecting wells in this county for over twenty years and this is the first time he has seen this happen!

Anyone else have water turning hot? This is really weird!

We are considering a move to Boise. I have never been there yet but my brother has jobs there and says it's beautiful. What is it like, conservativewise? I bet you can step out of the closet there. I am out of the closet here (L.A.) but only because I am either bold or stupid.

And are there trees? Every time I look at homes on the web, I see homes with no trees around them. I guess it's because many homes are very new? Is it deserty looking there in general, or are there plenty of trees??

Keep a virgin handy just in case.

I believe the last virgin sighted in California was in 1963.

The entire Yellowstone Valley is one GIANT volcano Caldera. It last blew 1/1/2 million years ago.

If it repeated the performance today, hundreds of thousands would die and our economy would be crippled for a generation.

P.S. The scientists have been detecting a steadily rising lave plume under yellowstone for some years now. God help us all if it blows in our (or our children's) lifetime!

Maybe he can import one from Vegas?

If something BIG was going on then other would be seeing this too. Maybe your water pump is burning up? How is your electric bill? Is that on the rise too?

Uhhhhhh

Are you sure?

My understanding is that the whole inland volcanic valley/area has been heating up for several decades in spots, relatively slowly. I forget where I heard that--but it was about 30 years ago when I was doing some backpacking in the area.

Mt Lassen last erupted ~1917. How far away are you and what sort of increase in temp are you seeing? Additionally, it might help to check the pH, total dissolved solids and conductivity levels (among other parameters) over time. You can either rent or buy a meter for that, or the county guy might loan you one. Check it before the water enters any softening equipment you might have. The rate and amount of change could be relevant to it actually being something.

If it's really drastic, you could probably rope me into coming up and looking at it. If you're property is going to begin jetting steam, sulfur and magmatic ejecta I want to be there, because I'm a geologist and that would be COOL! ;)

The water is crystal clear and sweet. It's just hot.
No earthquake or volcanic activity, although I've now had a couple people call and say that they are losing flow. That's how it started with mine.

I'd think the pump would have to be extremely hot and very poor at pumping water so that water when through it very slowly.
