WW2 Aerial Photographs Online

The Guardian Unlimited reports that unique aerial photographs of some of the key events of the Second World War are to be made available for the first time over the internet. The photographs are being made available through a website created by The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) at Keele University - an official place of deposit for the National Archives at Kew, West London.

The entire archive of more than five million aerial reconnaissance photographs, shot by the RAF over Western Europe during the conflict, is going online starting Monday. They include American troops landing on the Normandy beaches on D-Day, the seizure of the Pegasus bridge by British paratroops, the aftermath of the first 1,000 bomber raid on Cologne, and the German battleship Bismarck as the Royal Navy hunted her down. The multiple photographs taken by the high resolution cameras meant they were able to create 3-D images through an instrument called a "stereoscope". The technique was used to construct a detailed picture of the Normandy terrain ahead of the D-Day landing.

It'll probably stay busy for several days. Everyone's going to keep hitting it til they finally get through. A brand new site that many are interested in.

That's why I bookmarked it.....easy to find later on, once things die down, to check it out. It sounds like a winner.

If you're a freak for WWII history as I am, you can keep yourself busy at the World War II Multimedia Database until the British archives slow down enough for us folks to get there.

I'm also reading An Army at Dawn: The War in Africa, 1942-1943, Volume One of the Liberation Trilogy by Rick Atkinson a great book that puts the North African campaign in prospective.

Time for this lil "vampire" to grab a little shut-eye. I've been scouring the news all night and my eyes are starting to cross. LOL!!

Bump.

They've got a message that they're redesigning the site. (Still no pix available).

We apologise for the inconvenience, but the site is currently busy. Please try again later.
