Even Bill Clinton and a Democratic Congress didn't spend like this.

In tonight's State of the Union address, President Bush can claim credit for a rebounding economy spurred by two rounds of tax cuts. He can take further credit for pushing those cuts despite opposition from the deficit hand-wringers--including, we now know, his first Treasury Secretary.

FWIW. I also, sadly, am forced to agree with the author.

What a threat W is making, his first veto. His new tone only enabled his enemies.

Exactly. Washington DC doesn't work like Austin. There's a lot more money and the corruption that goes with it. Plus, state government is much closer to the people that it represents.

As a former drunken sailor I resent being compared to congress.

Good point ... in between binges, you did something worthwhile.

Congress is on a neverending binge.

No doubt that this president and this congress won't cut spending. But I don't think it's unrealistic to believe that spending could be cut with this Congress and a Democrat president like Clinton that they could unite against or a Republican leader like Reagan that would lead them.

When corporations tried accounting like this, Congress gave us Sarbanes-Oxley.

I'm glad to have Bush, rather than Gore, but I am getting alarmed at just how freely he seems to spend money. Whatever happened to "the government that governs least governs best"?

Other than war on terror, I voted for Bush and got a huge increase in government size and spending.

Most of the War on Terror falls directly into that category as well.

That concept was lost somewhere in the 20th century.

The more I hear coming out of Washington, from both sides, the more I think the two major parties will become harder to tell apart over the next decade. They are both trying to appeal to some of the same groups.

As soon as most politicians get elected and head off to Washington, their #1 priority becomes the next election. They will throw away campaign promises, ideologies, etc. in order to get elected again.

It's the sad truth. The only chance of somebody getting into office that believes in less government is a third party candidate that manages to survive the two major parties. I don't see that happening, both major parties will do everything they can to rip the 3rd party apart.
