The commission investigating the September 11 attacks needs more time to complete its work, say several of its members and a group representing relatives of those who were killed.

A deadline for the commission's report should be pushed back until the end of the year to take it out of the November election battle, members said.

"My view has always been that it would be best to take it completely out of the election cycle, by postponing the deadline until December," said Mr. Gorton.

Hopefully Gorton's view will prevail. The Democrats and the media would both love to see the report come out just before the election. It doesn't matter what is in the report. What matters is the timing, so that something in the report, no matter how innocuous, can be spun by the Democrats and the media, whose interests (as so often) coincide here.

This 9/11 Commission is turning into "The Son of Warren Commission." When I read of government agencies refusing to release documents, the 9/11 Commission loses credibility.

Don't they have a Presidential or Congressional Charter? Do they have professional investigators or just administrative pukes? In any event, they shouldn't have to fight to get their phone calls returned. Weird.

Since we all witnessed the event live on TV, there's not much more truth to be revealed that we don't already have. I think the commmission is a colossal waste of time and money.
