"Key provisions of the Patriot Act are to expire next year" and Bush was surprised by the applause

Did you all catch the moment?

During his third State of the Union speech President Bush said that "Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year," and was supirsed by the spontaneous applause!

Bush flushed for a second or two and then continued after a heart-skipping beat "The terrorist threat will not expire on that schedule. Our law enforcement needs this vital legislation to protect our citizens--you need to renew the Patriot Act." This elicited the larger if more canned applauses.

I saw it

The President was not rattled by it.

He was disappointed by it.

So was I. At some point the democrats will have to grow up.

There's too much on the line.

You shouldn't have started this vanity thread. Too many people here saw this exchange for you to pull the wool over our eyes. The President used the RAT applause to maximum benefit for his next line. You lose.

We were forced to pass the Patriot Act because of political correctness.

I don't know of any Norwegian Grandmothers that were involved in terrorist activities in the U.S.

I support Bush

Don't kid an old kidder. I have been around here long enough to know how you "support" Bush. Again, nice try.

I have to hope you are wrong.

If you are right then I may have to join a "third party" soon.

I support Bush as the best choice of two bad choices. The thought of CFR and immigration amnesty makes it hard to do but I try.

Didn't I see an article on FR lately pointing out that the primary success of the Patriot Act to date has been in the prosecution of a strip-club owner? Tax evasion, bribery, or some such.

It seems to me that we are giving up many liberties with this law. I could support it if there were some provision about it only being used against foreign threats.

I fail to see how bribed politicians, evaded taxes, and naked women (all home grown) represent a terrorist threat.

Lol, were that I had enough money to get wet in a laundry.
The longer I live the more I have observed that in this day and age one needs to reverse the normal meaning of the word to get at it's correct governmental double speak definition.

He is better then a Democrat...

That he certainly is. Nonetheless he should not be immune to criticism. But I do think conservatives ought to temper their criticism of the president, lest they hurt his chances against a lib Demonratif this election turns out to be close, as most predict, especially if sure-loser Dean falls by the wayside.

Ya know that little lady really gets around. I have heard of her being stripped searched in every airport in the country.

I'm glad they are going to pass the Patriot Act again; it is tough for the Bush haters to understand that Theodore Kasinski wasn't correct about the government... but it's is okay, many of us know we have to pity the poor souls.

taken a-back

Yeah, the same way you or I would be taken a-back when we bluff someone into betting more while were holding a bunch of aces.

He owned the rats tonight.
