Dobson Praises President's Support for Marriage; Pro-Family Leader Calls for Renewed Efforts to Protect Marriage

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family, issued the following statement Tuesday in response to President Bush's State of the Union address:

"I am immensely encouraged by President Bush's unequivocal support for the sanctity of marriage. The President believes, as does the overwhelming majority of Americans, that marriage is the exclusive union of one man and one woman.

"Marriage is under attack today, not because the American people are eager to intentionally deny children a mother or father, but because unelected, unaccountable judges are arrogantly legislating a radical social experiment from the bench. I applaud President Bush's recognition of the grave danger facing our nation -- and his courage to stand firm in support of a constitutional solution to judicial tyranny. I call upon the members of Congress to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment this session to ensure that the democratic process and marriage do not become obsolete.

"I am also pleased that President Bush has unashamedly endorsed abstinence education and programs as the single best way to prevent our children from paying the awful price that sexually transmitted diseases extract from those who are sexually active outside the bounds of marriage. I LOVE JAMES DOBSON. He helped me via his radio program after I had my first child. I was not a Christian at the time and a Christian friend of mine turned me on to him and RUSH at the same time. My first born was a very ambitious, curious, and active child and so this prompted me to buy THE STRONG WILLED CHILD. My son is now 15 and knows what DOBSON has done for me and when he sees the book says, "hey mom here is the book written about me".

I am so glad to see him supporting the President at this time and on this subject.
