New Yorkers can earn cash rewards for ratting out bodegas, groceries and individuals selling bootlegged cigarettes if a bill supported by Mayor Bloomberg wins approval.

Under the bill, the city would give a "suitable" reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the detection of violations of the cigarette tax.

Pretty soon we'll all be waiting for the "knock on the door". Whether or not we're smuggling, holding, or carrying...

Witness the rabid vindictiveness of America's Taliban.

I tell you, Osama screwed up; he should've declared a jihad on smoking, tobacco and exhaled smoke.

He'd take NY, CA, MA etc in a hearbeat.

I bet it's even illegal to fly a kite in NYC; I'm sure for appropriate safety reasons but a on the run Taliban might feel right at home in Manhattan.

Now to outlaw short skirts, alcohol, and food. I doubt the aim of this crowd is just this; alcohol, food is on the list.

"Revenue, revenue, revenue," said the Senate bill's sponsor, Frank Padavan (R-Queens), on the intent of the bill.

Well, he deserves some credit for his candor if nothing else.

Here in Taxachusetts, our great business minded Republican Governor is seriously pursuing legislation requiring banks to report out of state (namely New Hampshire) tobacco purchases made on debit cards.

"We don't want to arrest anyone" he said, (isn't he a swell guy?), we just want them to pay the commonwealth what's rightfully ours.

Does it stop there, or is he going after ALL purchases?

Nothing is rightfully "theirs" if it isn't purchased in their state. Even then, it's not "right."

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Mumbles Menino extend the hours of operation for all the bars, too?

I believe that you are correct, riders keep getting added to the initial proposal, when it finally clears the legislature, it otta be a doosy of a tax law.

Nothing is rightfully "theirs" if it isn't purchased in their state

This has been brought up to him on more than one occasion, he responded by stating he welcomes any and all legal challenges once the bill becomes law.
