IMO, Satan really has his panties in a knot over this movie, and has been throwing monkey wrenches into the gears whenever and wherever he can.
Looked at from that perspective, it could be that the Father of Lies is responsible for reports that the Pope said something he didn't, or for claims that the Pope didn't say something he did.
Too subtle for me to figure out. My gut reaction is that the Holy Father did say it, and other forces within the Vatican are denying it. Not going to bet the farm on that, though.
