Sounds like wishful thinking on the part of the study participants. LOL! In the pretty/not-pretty pairings, the assumption would be (in order to GET the pretty one) that the not-so-goodlooking person had something going for him besides looks, which would translate into future income. Income translates into comfort, which is conducive to happiness
