She looks like she might be a nice person, actually. Maybe that is why she stays away from him?

That was my thought exactly. Maybe she's of that school 'if you can't say something nice . . . '.

In that vein alone, we SHOULD admire Hillary - just as we admired Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush.

I'm not sure I would "Parka up" for a short trip to a warm bus, either.

On C-SPAN a few minutes ago, I saw a guy at a rally in Davenport ask Howie if he'd go on O'Reilly's show. Dean said no, and - his answer was muffled - something about O'Reilly just yelling and screaming. The guy, obviously a persistent cuss, asked him if he'd EVER go on the program. Howie dismissively waved his hand, and moved away at a double time pace. A real profile in courage.

Few of us Iowegians would wear a coat to walk 50 feet on a day like today. The only thing that bugged me about the beginning of her speech was the comment that she had not been to Iowa as much as she would have like to have been. Since this is her first trip here I think that is a tad disingenuous.

I haven't figured out why this is an issue. If she wants to work instead of campaign, I totally understand. It takes a sort of masochist to get out there in front of the media and ask 'em to rip into you.

is this a long-planned appearance to negate those who wonder where she is, keeping her form the press until the last minute so that she can't make any faux pas?

She appears to be nice lady, dedicated to her family and her profession.

I really don't understand the abundance of cattiness/nastiness on this thread.

There was a time in American when we could favor one candidate without working up hate for the other.

I'm willing to be gracious to Mrs. Dean until she starts making annoying comments about George Bush. Too bad Dems can't be the same toward Laura.

I don't dislike Dr. Steinberg. I think she is probably an admirable woman.

However, as President of the United States Dr. Dean will need to have a hostess at state dinners. It really is necessary to have someone who is willing to function as First Lady. As near as I can determine, if he is elected she has no intention of doing that.

It is a legitimate question and has nothing to do with her as a person. If you will notice, my question was about why Dean suddenly was brining her into the campaign, not anything to do with her looks, character, or ability.

There is enough wind to make it feel like -20 degrees, according to the weather windchill people ;-). And I'm guessing they had to walk across a tarmac or two (i.e. open space w/ no barriers).

"She will not remain in Iowa to campaign with him on Monday because she has patients she is scheduled to see in her medical practice..."

She is working on MLK's holiday? How are the black voters going to perceive this ignoring of respect to the day?

Please don't tell me she runs a one person doctor's office, never takes a vacation or a day off. If she died, what would her patients do?? If he became President, would she still practice?? Of course not.

The poor dope probably had to get down on his knees to beg her to come out.

If you don't believe in him dearie, divorce him because you simply don't care enough about the people of the United States who are going through the grueling process of selecting the President of the United States and you'd make a lousey first lady!!

Even Ahnold's wife came out to back him and she's a confirmed Democrat.

Hopefully there will never be a president Dean. That said, if there was, how would Mrs. Dean perform her duties as a doctor, maintaining patient/doctor privelege, when she would have Secret Service protection all the time? Would an agent be present in an examining room? In truth, Mrs. Dean would not be able to continue her profession as a doctor because of the constraints inherent with being First Lady.
