I couldn't help but wonder if the NYT was sneering behind the article at 'those stupid black folks down in Mississippi who don't know what's good for them'.
Maybe you're right, but I did not come away with that feeling. I just felt it was important to hear from these local blacks, and it seems no one else has talked to them about Pickering.

I guess being from MS myself, I look for a snide attitude among writers of the NYT towards my home state. They did the same thing during the time of the vote on the state flag.

IIRC, Charles Evers and others went to Washington and, at the very least, sat in support of Pickering during the hearing. I believe they talked to the Senators in support of Pickering, as well.
I don't think there is any way Schumer, et al, DIDN'T know of his support in the black community nor the real story behind Pickering.
Do any of you remember anything about this?
