NOW Outraged by Bush's Underhanded Appointment of Pickering

January 16, 2004

"The National Organization for Women is outraged by George W. Bush's installation of Charles Pickering on the federal appeals court while Congress is in recess," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "We're no longer surprised by the underhandedness of this President—Bush apparently thinks that he can act unilaterally wherever and whenever he pleases."

"NOW has vigorously opposed Pickering's nomination to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for more than two years, and the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected this foe of women's rights once before," said Gandy. "We will certainly work to ensure that this unmerited appointment is overturned when the next Congress takes office in January 2005."

Pickering, a district court judge from Mississippi, has a long record of opposing civil rights and civil liberties, demonstrating significant judicial activism from the bench. He was an opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment and has expressed his support for a constitutional amendment banning abortion. As a state senator, Pickering repeatedly voted against measures that would expand electoral opportunities for African Americans after passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

"Bush's total disregard for the Democratic members of Congress who rightfully blocked Pickering's nomination, his disregard for the women of this country and for democracy in general are appalling," said Gandy. "All the more reason for women's rights supporters to get active and to vote Bush out of office in November."

Here is a letter written to NOW

As a woman with a career,I find your organization and its message to women completely irrational. You on one hand tell us that we are strong and can accomplish anything a man can, and on the other you say we need your organization to accomplish those things. It appears you message is redundant.I for one do not need anyone to tell me what is good for a woman and what is not.If we are as strong and intelligent as you say we are, why do we need you?Are we not capable of making up our own minds? To be a completely capable person we need to stand on our own with our own principles, not those that a group says we should. For those who are unable or unwilling to make their own decisions, you might look good, but for someone who is an independent thinker, you are just a group with their own agenda. Thank You.

It's possible that Robin Williams, Martin Short, Lyle Lovett, Tom Hanks, and Kim Gandy are all the same person.

Anything that causes NOW to be "outraged" is good for society.

I was thinking this exactly! I'm not fired up over Pickering (other than Bush showed some fortitude in appointing him), but anything NOW is upset about must have been a good decision.

Egads, don't even mention "daughter's wedding." I have two daughters, 19 and 21,which puts them in the "marriageable range."

"President Bush is thumbing his nose at the American people. Charles Pickering is an extremist ideologue who has a demonstrated record of disregarding civil rights and actively working to take away women's reproductive freedoms," said Gloria Feldt, president of PPFA. "Given his history of attacks on civil rights, this underhanded appointment is particularly shameful, coming on the weekend during which we celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. With Pickering's appointment we have come one step closer to undoing the gains that Martin Luther King Jr. and all of our civil rights heroes worked so hard to ensure."

So Planned Parenthood is pontificating about civil rights?! Firstly, this is firm evidence they should not qualify for tax exempt status. Secondly, what happened to the civil rights of all the babies they've murdered and advocate murdering more of?!

I don't understand why Bush is stopping with Pickering. He should give Estrada a call and see if he is still interested...Get Estrada, Priscilla Owen, Janice Rogers Brown, and all the rest on the courts asap.

I wore tall heels for daughter's wedding thisJune. I was crippled by the reception which I spent barefooted dancing. It was agony. Whatever you do, wear a long dress and low shoes.

"We will certainly work to ensure that this unmerited appointment is overturned

It happens automatically when the next congress is sworn in, she knows it, so she can't even tell the truth about that.

PLEASE, LORD,

convert the convertable.

Uhhhhhh, and please, thoroughly and finally sideline the terminally stubborn and willfully rebellious.

. . . especially those who have made of bitterness and hostility a god--who have a fossilized attitude of contrariness and destructiveness--toward all that is decent and good--toward even good authority--let them reap quickly and overwhelmingly what they have sown.
