How does the verse you quoted--of Jesus saying that the scriptures testify of him--indicate that the whole of the Bible is not God's word (and therefore equally authoritative).
All orthodox Christians, while seeing Jesus' quoted words as precious, acknowlege the whole Bible is authoritative--as clearly did Christ. The verse you quote is a good one, as well as numerous others--showing the Son of God pointed to holy scripture to prove His claims.
I think unfortunately the "red letter" bibles, so common today, have blurred that orthodox principle--that ALL of the Bible is God's word.

I think unfortunately the "red letter" bibles, so common today, have blurred that orthodox principle--that ALL of the Bible is God's word. I use a "red letter" Bible, and it has never blurred the fact that all of it is God's Word.

"I think unfortunately the "red letter" bibles, so common today, have blurred that orthodox principle--that ALL of the Bible is God's word."
I to acknowledge all the Bible as God's word, I have learned more from reading the word of God and believe all of it as Jesus commanded. It is sad and unfortunate that so many pick and choose what they will, though they call themselves Christians, but promote heresies and lies. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and the way,the truth and the life for those reborn of God.
" 4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
The old and new testaments are full of what God said for all those who would believe Him as He spoke through many of His prophets and the apostle Paul for the grace age church. Jesus Christ is indeed God and man and did indeed fulfill the law and all the prophets; yet He acknowledges that all scripture is His word. I have no doubt that the old testament Jehovah is the new testament Jesus in the flesh and blood who was crucified for our sins and who rose again the third day for our salvation. God the father said so and verifies Thoth His Holy Spirit every day for believers. The old testament and new testament scriptures would be full of red letters if men took the same care to red letter His Word throughout.
14. These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15. But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Jesus is Lord of all and saviour of them that believe on Him and His sinless death for us at Calvary.
The apostle Paul THROUGH the inspiration of God tells all those who believe on Jesus Christ for salvation (by grace through faith are ye SAVED);
" 16. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"
It is sad that so many who call themselves Christians ignore the whole word of God and therefore cause heresies to abound and ignorance to flourish. Peter the apostle tells us;
" 15. Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
16. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."
When the Father speaks of the Son, should not this also be red lettered?
