Egyptian President, Moroccan King blast West Bank barrier, call for Mideast roadmap to be implemented.
CAIRO - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Moroccan King Mohammed VI on Wednesday called for the unconditional implementation of the internationally drafted Middle East peace "roadmap."
In a joint statement at the end of their talks here, they also called for the United Nations to play "pivotal role" in Iraq.
They "hailed international efforts deployed to relaunch the peace process in the Middle East" and called for the implementation of the roadmap "without conditions or modification" from the Israeli side.
They blasted "Israel's attempt to judaise Jerusalem" and exhorted "the international community "to end the Israeli aggression against the holy city," the eastern part of which was occupied and annexed by the Jewish state in 1967.
They also condemned Israel's construction of a barrier through parts of the West Bank, which the Palestinians regard as an attempt to pre-empt the borders of their promised future state and grab some of their most fertile land.
The roadmap calls for steps from both sides toward ending more than three years of violence and reaching a final peace settlement based on a Palestinian state to be created in 2005.
The Moroccan king chairs the Al-Qods (Jerusalem) committee within the Saudi-based Organisation of the Islamic Conference, which groups more than 50 Muslim countries around the world.
He and Mubarak also expressed their "deep worry because of the deteriorating situation in Iraq, which threatens the Iraqi people and stability in the region."
They stressed the "necessity that the United Nations plays a pivotal role in the process of rebuilding Iraq and restoring its stability."
Mohammed VI arrived here Tuesday. His talks with Mubarak also focused on energising trade between the two North African states, officials said.
