Bush's proposal is "compassionate" to whom? Certainly NOT the people who elected him or the people Bush is supposed to be serving. WE WERE DUPED AND WE ARE ABSOLUTELY AT THE MERCY OF A PRESIDENT THAT CARES NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE THINK NOR WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY..!!

Ziporrah, I really don't think we conservatives were duped when we voted for Bush in 2000. We knew that he would be "moderate-to-liberal." It's not a surprise. We may have kidded ourselves, but we knew that his conservatism had strict limits, mostly tax cuts that did not affect everyone and a partial-birth abortion ban, which may or may not limit abortions in the long run. Of course, we thought he did a commendable job after 9-11, but the bloom is off the rose for many of us now. Some may actually vote for a minor candidate in the Republican primaries, but most will still hold their noses and vote for Bush in the fall. After all, old habits are hard to break! We've been voting for Bushes now since 1980, hoping against hope that it will "make a difference."
