Mt. Washington New Hampshire Observatory report: 7:08 PM EST

Temp -28.5°F Wind West @61 MPH Gusts of 63 MPH Wind Chill-72°F

Observer's Comments:

07:08 PM Wed Jan 14, 2004 EST Our phones have been ringing all day today with inquiries of our temperatures. Yes it is cold up here, even by our standards. Over the past twenty four hours, the lowest wind chill was 102 degrees below zero... but I can tell you, it felt more like 500 below to me! Once again we have recorded a new record low today of 45 degrees below zero. Now our focus shifts to Thursday night, when a low moves by while intensifying over the Canadian Maritimes, driving even more cold air into the region. There have been talks of fifty degrees below zero Fahrenheit, which would break New Hampshire's state record low of minus 47, which was set up here in 1934. Wow, was it really this past June that we tied our own record high of 72 degrees?

I feel pretty good knowing that it's only going to be -9 degrees below 0 with a wind chill of -20 degrees down here where I live in Southern NH tonight. Got the heat up, the electric heaters running, the thermal blankets bundled on the bed, and the pets under the thermal blankets, leaving just enough room for us. Sweet dreams New England Freepers!

Hope the actic blast keeps dipping south by southwest. We need Foxboro frigid on Sunday for the Dome-headed colts.

And pray that Al Qaeda doesn't hit the power grid tonight.

Sweet dreams! ;-)

Well, we do have a gas powered generator just for such emergencies, thank goodness. Have only had to use it once, but it beats freezing I guess. Can't wait for summer...(I won't even complain about mosquitoes...)

It's always 100 below at Mount Washington. Wind chill, of course. Once it was 40 below in Keene, no wind.

Used to live in Glen and we hiked the Presidentials lots in the winter (personally my favorite time).

A memorable solo hike up Washington - beautiful clear January day, so lots of people going up - the temp never broke -20F but the wind was only 30 to 40 MPH. Glorious. Back down in Pinkham after sundown, the temp was -32F. Didn't even bother to remove plastic mountaineering boots, gloves, or down parka. Car started fine but it was all the way back to Glen before the heater got above lukewarm.

Another time in December we topped out of Huntington and the wind was steadily gusting 100+ MPH, we had to crawl on hands and knees (literally) all the way over to Lion Head trail.

Oh, good idea! We have one also. We used it when the former Dem. negotiated large increases of power rates to major donors of his campaign. His buddies in the powere industry would then go offline on a rotating basis on the powergrid to artificially create an energy shortage.

I was home alone when the whole system crashed for about 10 hours. At hour #3 I decided that it was time to learn how to fire that baby up. The hardest part was getting it out of the shed and filling it with gas.

I hope the Colts bring their Thermies with them. They're gonna need them.

The Pats are gonna put 'em on ice!
