Border Collies are very smart but are not really family dogs. They must have a job or they are maniacs.
One can take the dog away from the sheep herding but one cannot take the sheep herding out of the dog.
They are beautiful and smart as a whip but really not for cities or families in them.

We have a Border and he is the BEST dog in the world. He is so smart and invents games to entertain himself. Watching him is better than TV. Our house is in a subdivision with a fenced in yard and he does fine. I do stay at home all day, so he isn't bored. He loves being talked to. I don't think Borders do well being left alone. They are not good dogs for people who work all day or travel a lot.

We had a border collie for 12 years. She did fine in the house, although she herded anything that moved. Loved it when the kids played soccer - she tried to herd the ball. The one time we tried to have her bred, she refused - there were cows nearby, and she was more interested in working them.
If someone wants to own a border collie, they need to understand that intensity. Wonderful dogs...if the AKC doesn't ruin them!

Border Collies are very smart but are not really family dogs. I know 3 dogs where the families purposely cross-bred a Border Collie and a Black Lab (3 litters w/ 1 male lab 2 different female border collies)
Not only are these dogs some of the easiest to train, but they are absolutely the smartest dogs I've ever seen and the best behaved, even as puppies.
2 are with families and 1 is with an older couple.

We have a friend with one and he herds her and her friends into a small circle. We’ll be standing up chatting and the next thing we know we are almost packed up together like sardines. The dog subtly circles us and gently nudges us intil we’re in a tight group. lol
