Dean urged Clinton to take unilateral action in Bosnia By Steve Komarow, USA TODAY Democratic presidential contender Howard Dean, a strong critic of what he calls President Bush's unilateral approach to foreign policy, urged President Clinton to act unilaterally and enter the war in Bosnia in 1995. (Related item: Text of letter) "I have reluctantly concluded that the efforts of the United States and NATO in Bosnia are a complete failure," he wrote, citing reports of genocide during the Bosnian civil war. "If we ignore these behaviors ... our moral fiber as a people becomes weakened. ... We must take unilateral action."

U.S. interveened to HELP Bosnian Muslims, not to neutralize Bosnia as a threat.
Regarding Bosnia link to 1993 WTC Bombing, follow the money:
1. Alija Izetbegovic, the President of Bosnia, provided a guarantee for Elfatih Hassanein (a personal friend of Izetbegovic) to open an account for the TWRA in Die Erste Osterreich Bank in Vienna, Austria in 1993.
TWRA was front for financing of terrorist activities workld-wide.
The Washington Post wrote on 22 September 1996: "TWRA is believed to be connected with such fixtures of the Islamic terror network as Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (the convicted mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing) and Osama bin Laden, a wealthy Saudi Emigree believed to bankroll numerous militant groups".
Bosnia Serbs are not "10-20% of the population" as you claim. Check the facts:
"Bosnian Croats, predominantly Roman Catholic (17 per cent of Bosnia's population at the 1991 census); Bosnian Serbs, predominantly Orthodox (32 per cent); and Bosniacs, who are Bosnian Muslims (44 per cent). The remainder of Bosnia's 1991 population (totalling 4.36 million) was made up of those who described themselves as 'Yugoslav' (5 per cent) and 'other ethnicities' (2 per cent)." (Stubbs 1998, p. 192)
The number of Serbs in Bosnia dwindled owning to the GENOCIDE commited against them in WWII by Croat and Bosnian Muslim Nazis (Usasha and Waffen SS). More than 700,000 Serbs were murdered. Some areas were DEPOPULATED of Serbs and settled by Croats and Muslims.
Serbs were first slaugherted in WWII and then their land was stolen.
Bosnian Serbs OWNED 70% of land in Bosnia according to cadastre records. One can not be Land-grabber of something he already OWNS.
It was Bosnian Muslims (44% of population) who wanted all land mass for themselves regardless of the fact that they did not own it.
This anwers who the land-grabbers in Bosnia are and whom Clintoon chose to support.
When my one of nephews was in Bosnia last year with the US Army, he was alert against BOSNIAN muslims who had connections with al quada.
He was NOT on alert against SERBS.
Another nephew is at Camp Bondsteel. He says al quada is suspected of being recruiting in Kosovo, as well. And they are NOT recruiting Serbs they are killing them.
Face it, muslims are going jihad against the WEST even among YOUR precious Bosnian and Albanian muslims. THIS IS FACT.
And it makes you look like a clark supporter, when you come around these posts calling anybody who dislikes clinton policy in the Balkans racist or worse.
Pounding the desk when you can not pound the facts is proven liberal tactics. If you find the facts offensive, don't patron Free Republic. It is because of people like you that U.S. public did not realize with whom Clintoon government was dealing with.
MIllenial Plot
"The December 14, 1999, arrest of Algerian national Ahmet Ressemi at a U.S.-Canada border crossing in British Columbia in a car full of nitroglycerin and bomb-making materials was headline news in North America. Many theorized that Ressemi planned to blow up a major structure in the U.S. to start the new millenium.
The theorists could have saved themselves some time by taking a closer look at Ressemi¦s past ties, especially those with terrorists trained in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where Ressemi fought as a mujahadeen.
It has been confirmed that Ahmet Ressemi had ties with Said Atmani, another terrorist who fought in the "El Mujahadeen" unit in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Canadian authorities deported Atmani back to Bosnia-Herzegovina on October 18, 1998, supposedly without knowing of his alleged participation in terrorist activities through Europe."
Actually, it is not: * Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (the convicted mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing) was connected to the TWRA, a phony relief agency. Alija Izetbegovic, the President of Bosnia, provided a guarantee for Elfatih Hassanein (head of the TWRA and a personal friend of Izetbegovic) to open an account for the TWRA in Die Erste æsterreich Bank in Vienna, Austria in 1993.
* Mohammed Haydar Zammar, the man who recruited key 9-11 hijacker, Mohammad Atta, to the Al-Qaeda network, based his terrorist activities in Bosnia. Zammar also brought two of Atta's lieutenants into the Al-Qaeda network, namely Ramzi Binalshibh and Said Bahaji.
* Osama Bin Laden was given a Bosnian passport at the Bosnian Embassy in Vienna, Austria. Many other terrorists connected to the Al-Qaeda network also received blank Bosnian passports that enabled them to further propagate their illicit activities.
* Abu el Maali (Abdelkader Mokhtari), a senior representative of Al-Qaida, was based in Bosnia until recently. Just a few years ago, a US official called him a junior Osama Bin Laden.
* Bensayah Belkacem was arrested in October 2001 in Bosnia. Numbers stored in his mobile phone link him to at least one of Bin Laden's top lieutenants.
Methinks your supoport of Islamonazis after 9-11 is disgrace.
"In the 1995 letter, Dean argued for unilateral action in Bosnia on moral grounds. "As the Catholic Church and others lost credibility during the Holocaust for not speaking out, so will the United States lose credibility," he wrote.
The civil war in the former Yugoslavia gave rise to war crimes and mass murders not seen in the West since World War II. U.N. peacekeeping had failed, but the Clinton administration was undecided on whether to take military action.
Dean told Clinton that America had to intervene alone because the United Nations and NATO were unable to act effectively. He called for Clinton to bomb the Bosnian Serbs and supply arms to the Bosnian Muslims. He opposed using American ground troops."
We got a two-fer, the advocation of unilateralism and Catholic bashing. This nut may have a hard time carrying Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
And there's no doubt who got this letter to USA Today. Hint: rhymes with Sill Filton.
Why should we have been "impartial"? There were many misteps -including and especially Clintons narcissistically using the war to show that he personally was relevant in international affairs; insisting that Western powers arms-embargo all sides, while letting Iran and some of the more radical Islamist groups supply arms (hence gain influence where they were previously looked askance at); and other grand-standing messing around - that caused things to go the way they did. It's like blaming GHWBush for "Blackhawk Down" in Somalia.
Proof once again that, to a Democrat, use of force is only justified when there IS NOT a significant US national security concern. These people are clearly too naive to be be in charge of the government.
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
After long and careful thought, and after several years of watching the gross atrocities committed by the Ba'ath party and Saddam Hussein in Iraq, I have reluctantly concluded that the efforts of the United Nations, the IAEA and others in Iraq are a complete failure.
I think your policy up to this date has been absolutely correct. We must give, and have given, this policy with our allies and with the United Nations every opportunity to work. It is evident, however, that the cost in human lives in allowing this policy to continue is too great. In addition, and perhaps more importantly for the United States, we are now in a position of ignoring, as many did in the 1940s, one of the worst crimes committed in history. If we ignore these behaviors, no matter where they occur, our moral fiber as a people becomes weakened. As the Catholic Church and others lost credibility during the Holocaust for not speaking out, so will the United States lose credibility and our people lose confidence in themselves as moral beings if the United States does not take action against Iraq.
Since it is clearly no longer possible to take action in conjunction with the United Nations and allies such as France and Germany, I have reluctantly concluded that we must take unilateral action. While I completely agree with you that no ground troops should be committed for other than humanitarian purposes in Iraq, I would ask that you take the following steps in Iraq. First, lift any arms embargo as applies to opposition groups, such as the KDP, PUK or SCIRI. Second, enforce a full embargo of the sort that is now in effect in North Korea and on Cuba, upon Saddam Hussein. Third, break off any further discussions with Iraq. Fourth, commit American air power to support the Kurds in the north and other Iraqi opposition groups until the situation is stabilized and the civilian murders and atrocities by the Ba'athists, Saddam and his sons Uday and Qusay, have been stopped.
I understand the risks of this policy and their implications for the relations with allies, such as France and Germany and the future success of the United Nations. Surely, however, as you watch and read about the huge amount of unwarranted human suffering, particularly of children, for example in Halabja, you would agree that our current course must now be changed. I urge you to make these changes as soon as possible, and I look forward to supporting your policy fully to the best of my ability.
Sincerely,
Howard Dean, M.D. Former Governor and Candidate for President of the United States"
