Actually, it looks as though the truck exploded as it went through the conrete bridge barrier. The drivers of those two vehicles still up on the bridge must have been freaking bigtime to watch that truck go over the side and then the ensuing fireball. Dang. Just..... Dang.

It's close enough that traffic in and out might be affected; this is a big area effect.
Tell him to take his time, and plan a route beforehand. The detours are already in place.

I have a grandson at Ft. George...don't have a very good map of the area...is this near the accident scene? Not really, about 15 miles or so by road.

"I think the underpasses and bridges are common places for these major accidents because of the lack of clear space on the sides."I was taught (by two of the most experienced drivers I know) that any large object close to the side of the road tends to create a visual draw.......and unless a driver is alert, it can easily result in the driver inadvertently steering toward it. That's why I'm extra cautious whenever I pass a stalled car or an overpass support column.......and if I have to pull off of the highway myself, I try to make sure I get as far off the side of the road as possible.
(Just a sideline driving tip.......doesn't sound like it was a factor in this accident.)

My son is southbound on 95-crossed Delaware Bridge about an hour ago. Updates, please.
I'm in California. Hoping your son is OK.

My apologies to everyone I offended by saying this was hugh. I will never ever again use humor in a horrible situation.
How about never saying hugh and series again. It's getting VERY UNFUNNY under any circumstance.

Thanks, he and his buddies just called-detoured into East BF Maryland, somewhat lost, but fine.
Thanks for the good wishes.

I remember another tanker truck accident 8-10 years ago torching a bridge somewhere around Annandale on the Beltway.Wasn't there one a couple years ago on the MD side of Wilson Bridge that scorched the Beltway?
I don't know, the doomer insinuations here are a little silly. We don't have exploding tankers every day, but we do have lots and lots and lots of truck and car accidents here in DC and Baltimore. Especially just before rush hour.

I remember another tanker truck accident 8-10 years ago torching a bridge somewhere around Annandale on the Beltway. Maybe you are thinking about the one that happened below one of the bridges on the Beltway to I-270 spur, in Bethesda? It torched that bridge very well.
My solution to D.C traffic (issues like this are happening almost daily) will be to sell everything and move as soon as possible.

I know. Leave it to me to pick the no-humor thread to try and be funny on. Oh well, I did get an award for my trouble making. :)
And I do pray and hope for the best for everyone involved in this horrible accident.

Ft. George???? You must mean Ft. Meade (for George Gordon Meade). No worries, Ft. Meade is at least 15-20 minutes away from the scene. The accident was in Howard County very near the Baltimore County line.
