Poll Hints Bush Immigrant Plans UnpopularNewsMax.com Wires
Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004
WASHINGTON -- More than half of Americans oppose President Bush's plan that would allow some illegal immigrants to stay for several years to work jobs U.S. citizens don't want, a poll indicates. Just over half, 55 percent, said they oppose the plan, while 42 percent favor it, according to a CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll out Monday.
By a 2-1 margin, those in the poll said immigrants hurt the economy by driving wages down for many Americans rather than help the economy by providing low-cost labor. In 2000, people were split on that question.
When people were asked whether the United States should make it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, 74 percent said no - up from 67 percent in August 2001.
The poll of 1,003 adults was taken Jan. 9-11 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I voted for Bush and hate this plan as well as a few others far too liberal that he has worked on.
I almost puke everytime I think of how he let FAT Teddy Kennedy walk all over him.

Just over half, 55 percent, said they oppose the plan, As long as its the half that doesn't have anywhere else to go, it doesn't matter. What are they going to do, vote Democrat?

No, they'll just sit this one out, the same way that many conservatives did with Bush I in '96. No one forces you to go vote at gunpoint.

Those who think low-wage immigrants hurt the economy are economic illiterates. They are falling for the fallacies of protectionism. The country as a whole does not benefit from "high wages" maintained by excluding low-wage immigrants, just as the economy as a whole does not benefit from any other form of protectionism. People are made wealthy by PRODUCTION of actual goods and services.
The REAL reason to keep illegal immigrants out is to preserve the culture and national sovereignty of the United States. There may be an economic COST to doing so. But it's still worth doing.

"Will some one tell me when and where mexico has ever." Don't forget that little letter the chancellor of Germany sent to the Mexican president offering to "share the spoils" of the United States if Mexico would attack from the South during WWI.
This little bit of history is almost as hidden as the soviet cables.

This whole thing is about popularity. It'll never see the light of day if it's not popular.
