New book 'The Perfect Wife' says she wanted her teenagers to be no different than other teens By Ann Gerhart

THE WASHINGTON POST

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

The armored black limousine glides to a stop near a U.S. military jet at Andrews Air Force Base early one morning in May 2002. Laura Bush is about to embark on her first solo trip as first lady, a 10-day visit to three European nations, where she will speak out for Afghan women's rights.

An aide opens the door, and she slides her legs carefully out and steps onto the tarmac. She knows her part well: Pause to smile, wave and let the photographers dutifully record the image. The small press corps knows its part, too, and watches with no expectations. Suddenly, one leg in worn corduroy, then the other, swings off the limo seat. Jenna Bush stands up to follow her mother into the plane, and the reporters go on alert. It's the rowdy twin, the one who has been busted twice in four weeks for underage drinking, who has run her Secret Service detail ragged, who was captured in the National Enquirer falling down, cigarette in hand.

Very similar to the thread last week. I can't blame the First Lady for wanting her girls to be like any other girls. I wish the media would let them grow up without the constant battering.

While going to college and even a few years after I worked part time in college bars as a bouncer...

The stuff I've seen kids get away with...was way way beyond anything the Bush kids have done...

(wont even mention the felonious crap the Clintons got away with)

imo ..the Bush girls have been singled out for harrasment..

When you can't get at the father, you attack his children. Typical left-wing hatred and despicability (is that a word). Anyway, there are no words for my hatred of the media. I did not like attacks on Chelsea when she was just the President's daughter, and I don't like this stuff.

Sleazy journalism. lack of ethics and manners are de rigeur these days. Sad, really.

and she treated her Secret Service agents with respect (Chelsea)

Well, her mother certainly had/has no respect for the military and her scorn and abuse of security officials is well documented. Somehow I am skeptical that Chelsea is a bastion of compliance and good-will toward her Secret Service agents. And that casts the overall credibility of the tone of article in a certain doubt.

Poor Chelsea never had a chance to be the teenager in that family. Bill had the lock on that role.

No doubt the "road Map" in Israle has failed because the twins didn't attend the negotiations, as did Chelsea..

Can you imagine the outrage from the left if the media had attacked Chelsea when El Slicko and old Crusty were in the Whitehouse?

Of course, the media is so far left they would never had said one bad word about Chelsea.

The corduroy jeans are ratty at their too-long hems. Jenna is wearing a short black T-shirt, and her exposed tummy pooches out over the low-riding waistband. Flip-flops are on her feet. Her blond hair has been pinned up carelessly. Sunglasses cover her eyes. Hoisting a backpack, she clomps up the plane stairs and disappears.

The author is making a lot of to-do over presidential daughter appearance. I have to wonder if she reallllly wants to go there? One cheap shot begs another, doesn't she know?

Sounds like the run of the mill youngsters I see today. Especially the slouchy attire. A lot of kids don't want to stand out. At lest they aren't sporting pink-purple hair, pleated plaid short skirt with straps hanging all over and combat boots. Oh, oh yes, and the stainless steel hanging out of body orifices.

Been there, seen that. In this very house. Three girls, three times. ;-)

Gosh, I haven't seen him in a long time either.

And do you mean debut, like "debut," or in a fashion show?

I don't know how believable this story is, given it came from a hostile source. If Mrs. Bush failed to require better behavior from her daughters, including adherence to the laws regulating alcohol consumption by minors, she acted unwisely from both a parental standpoint and a political perspective. Given that this story was issued by The Washington Post, it is probably no more than a hit piece and thus should be discounted.

This article was also printed in the Austin Un-American Liberal Rag. The Austin Rag thinks anything printed in any of the large circulation papers is 100% truth.

I know. I know. If I had to have kids again I would have to make a deal to skip the years between 0 and 3, 13 and 21.

Well, I never had a daughter, only one son; but my husband has two daughters and my niece has lived with us since my sister died.

Believe me, it was quite a shock. I'm of the firm belief that you have to give BIRTH to girls and grown up with them to understand all that......I was totally clueless for a long time!
