Was the demagogue's party affiliation ever specified? (Surely Martin Sheehan played him as a right-wing wacko.)

Indo-American Council deplores Hillary remarks on Mahatma Gandhi

Washington, Jan 10 (PTI) The Indian-American Republican Council today asked Senator Hillary Clinton to apologise directly to the Indo-American community for the "outrageous" comments she reportedly made on Mahatma Gandhi.

"It is simply outrageous that Hillary Clinton used the venerable Mahatma Gandhi to perpetuate racial stereotypes," the Council's co-chairman Sudhakar Shenoy said.

Hillary had joked that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in the US, while speaking at a fund-raiser for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer. She had regretted the comments in the same speech saying Gandhi was a great leader of 20th century.

"Hillary Clinton said she was just making 'a lame attempt at humour.' This is truly shameful. I assure that the Indian American community is not laughing. Humour based on racial slurs has no place in public discourse. We call on Hillary Clinton and Nancy Farmer to apologise directly to Indian Americans," he said.

The comments demonstrate Hillary Clinton doesn't truly respect our heritage and culture, Shenoy said.

"Bill and Hillary Clinton heap lavish praise to our faces, but behind our backs, they use hurtful racial stereotypes that perpetuate ignorance and cause harm to our community," he said.

Hillary had urged Americans in her book 'It Takes a Village' that adults must speak out against racial, ethnic, religious or gender slurs. "It is the height of hypocrisy for her to urge Americans to speak out against ethnic slurs, only to shamelessly make such slurs herself," he said. PTI

It wasn't funny.

Right.

Her ethnic stereotyping

This is the part that I don't understand. What's the "ethnic stereotype" with Gandhi in a gas station? I don't get it.

Ah. I did not know that. Where, exactly, is that a stereotype? I've never heard it. I don't recall ever seeing an Indian working at a gas station. Is it an accurate stereotype?

I agree with you, it's niether "racist" nor "funny" HOWEVER what is truely offensive is the double standard exercised here. If Hillary had an (R) behind her name the liberls and democrats would be screaming for her scalp.

....I'd love to know what Trent Lott has to say about this.

"She might have called him a bastard. I wouldn't rule that out. She's never claimed that she was pure on profanity. But I've never heard her tell a joke with an ethnic connotation. She's so fanatic about it. She can't tell an ethnic joke. It's not in her."

Bill Clinton, in a call to
the New York Daily News
17 July 2000

"Hillary hit him between the eyes. She was angrier than Paul had ever seen her. 'You f**king Jew bastard!' she screamed."

author Jerry Oppenheimer
quoting campaign aide Paul Fray
State of a Union
(New York: Harper-Collins, 2000) p. 153

Gandhi, gas station attendant, was supposed to be a joke; ethnicity, i.e, exploitation of stereotype, was a crucial component; hence, hillary clinton's throwaway (you can bet she wishes she had) lines were an ethnic joke.... Q.E.D.

But as I have argued ad nauseam, the implications of hillary clinton's ethnic "joke" are of greater import than the substance of the "joke" per se.

  • clinton's ethnic "joke" belies the denial of hillary's anti-Semitic slur.
  • clinton's ethnic "joke" exposes/confirms the obvious: purported clinton smarts is primarily PR, not IQ.
