NEWPORT, Tenn. A woman was convicted of killing her 4-month-old son by giving him a pacifier she had rolled in crushed OxyContin pills.
According to the statement Debra Elaine Kirk Moore gave police, she and her husband had crushed Oxycontin tablets and taken the drug before lying down with the baby. The boy, Lacy Moore III, soon awoke and would not go back to sleep.
Moore "took his pacifier into the bathroom where the OxyContin had been crushed. There were crumbs and dust, and I stuck the wet pacifier into the dust and crumbs and put it back into the baby's mouth," according to her statement to police.
When they awoke the next morning, the baby wasn't breathing. He died two days later, on July 22, 2002. Authorities said the baby's father was preparing a bottle of milk and didn't know what his wife had done.
Moore, 23, was convicted Wednesday of criminally negligent homicide and aggravated child abuse. The homicide conviction carries a sentence of one to two years, and the child abuse term is 15 to 25 years. Sentencing was set for Feb. 23.
OxyContin, a brand name for the narcotic medication oxycodone, is prescribed for time-released pain relief. Drug abusers can obtain a heroin-like high by crushing the pills before taking them.
The jury was not told that Debra Moore lost another child just four months before her son's death. Her 2-year-old daughter, Adrianna Faye Moore, died in a swimming pool in March 2002.
The judge ruled it would be prejudicial for the jury to hear about the girl's death.
Prosecutor Jimmy Dunn said indications are Adrianna died accidentally, but the investigation was continuing. No charges have been filed.

What the bloody HELL are you talking about?
A "Darwin Award" is when someone commits an act of their own free will that kills them before they can breed. It is NOT something that is called when a child dies as a result of parental abuse or neglect!
So we can look forward to insensitive idiots calling "Darwin Award" the next time some stupid parent runs their car off the road and kills all their children in the process? And we can look forward to cries of "Darwin Award" the next time a young girl aborts the fetus in her womb?
I don't think so. That's not what "Darwin Awards" are about.
I am being nice. You didn't see my first draft response that I didn't send. I was NOT being nice in that one.
There are ways to explain things.
Great. Can't wait to hear this one.
Please remember "TrappedinLiberalHell"
I don't remember, so please oblige me with a reminder.
Wrong a Darwin award is for any action that removes someone his or her genes from the gene pool. She has caused the deaths two of her children which carry genes. Some people have been awarded Darwin awards for accidents that removed their gonads. What's this "free will" thing? Some Darwin Award winners do really stupid things that possibly don't include the use of brain cells.
No, you are wrong. I suggest you try reading the Darwin Award books or at least reading the web sites. You are ignorantly claiming the Darwin Award is something it's not.
And I personally find it offensive that you would take this awful tragedy and try to trivialize it with this calling for a "Darwin Award." Do you do that when a young woman aborts the baby in her belly, too??
And the only cry you'll hear from me in that second instance is murder.
I should maybe be sorry for being outraged that someone actually is trying to make fun of the senseless death of a baby?? I don't think so.
TrappedinLiberalHell was wonderful FReeper. Always funny and well loved. He raised tomatoes and talked about how people can be very harsh and mean on the board.
He suicided.
And did anyone call "Darwin Award" on his suicide? Picture what outrage you would have felt at that. Now double it. Now raise it an order of magnitude.
Now you're getting close to my level of outrage.
