I think you might be right about PHX not having as much sophisticated equipment as Midway, but also it may have a lot to do with how far the plane was from either airport. Had the plane been halfway to either airport, they could have chosen Omaha or another midpoint.

Finally found an article on it. The plane was bound for O'Hare according to this:

NBC5 reported that a flight attendant going through the plane before takeoff found putty with wires sticking out of it in a lavoratory aboard the plane and the pilots grounded the aircraft as a result. United Express spokesman Jeff Green told NBC5 that investigators tested the putty and found that it was not dangerous.

Again. As an airplane passenger on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day I can tell you that security was really "fun" and nothing happened. Wild-eyed arabs weren't running around. Men in fluorescent jackets stood outside the ticket gates entering the airports to check cars. God only knows how they would have known a real terrorist unless a Pakistani had a sign around his neck saying, "I vill sue if you stop me, you vill be interferring vith my American civil right of explosion!".

Something about crying wolf all the time comes to mind because even the Euros are griping that some of these warnings come from the CIA. And the CIA is about as realible as a Chucky Cheese party.

Real terrorists dont call in bomb threats, this is nothing to get excited about. The fact that they are turning around is not a good thing, and will just incourage more of the same.

Plane Lands After Bomb Threat

CBS 2 News has learned that Southwest Airline Flight 1003 took off from Midway Airport and has apparently been called back and returned to the airport after a bomb threat that was called in by phone.

As a precaution, the pilot made the decision to turn the plane around and return to the airport. There were 123 passengers and five crew members onboard.

In such a situation, they normally deplane the passengers, get them out of harm's way and search the airplane very carefully before they bring the plane into the terminal. The passengers will probably be rescreened, put on another flight and go on their way to Phoenix.

The aircraft currently being searched by authorities. Officials estimate there will be a two hour delay before passengers resume the flight, West said.

"Our goal now is to make sure that plane gets the all clear and to get those passengers on their way to Phoenix," said Southwest spokesperson Ed West.
